Abstract

Answer D. Urgent referral to the on-call general surgerical team
The history and examination are suggestive of an incarcerated hernia. The patient may show signs and symptoms of intestinal obstruction, such as vomiting and abdominal distension. On examination, it is important to determine whether you can define the upper limit of the swelling. If you cannot get above the swelling and it does not reduce easily, suspect an incarcerated hernia and discuss referral with the local general surgical team.
