Abstract

For patients that have persistent pain and swelling despite the use of splints and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, glucocorticoid injections may be given into the first dorsal compartment. The results from randomised trials have shown that the use of glucocorticoid injections provide symptomatic relief. The combined use of splints and corticosteroid injections has been found to be more effective than splinting alone. Although surgery is an option in De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, it is usually considered in patients with persistent symptoms despite the use of glucocorticoid injections, splints and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication
