Abstract

Answer B. Topical oestrogen
The clinical picture above is suggestive of genito-urinary syndrome of the menopause (GSM). Oestrogen deficiency in post-menopausal women often causes atrophy of the vaginal skin. Women with genito-urinary syndrome of the menopause (GSM) usually note irritation and soreness aggravated by sexual intercourse, but can also experience post-coital bleeding from trauma to fragile vaginal skin. Examination findings include smooth, pale, dry vagina with contact bleeding. Treatment includes the use of lubricants, moisturisers or topical oestrogens.
