Community nurses, such as health visitors and midwives or district nurses, can prescribe from the Nurse Prescriber’s Formulary – listed in the back of the British National Formulary. Appropriate training is required. Examples of these medications include paracetamol and ibuprofen, various emollients (but not steroid ointments), laxatives, anti-fungal creams and nicotine replacement therapy.
