A 48-year-old patient presents in the emergency clinic with right-sided facial pain and swelling that has developed over the past 6 hours. After appropriate history taking and examination you suspect the cause to be a dental abscess. There is no sign of sepsis or airway compromise. The patient is not currently registered with a dental practice.
Refer the patient to the oral and maxillofacial surgeons for incision and drainage Refer the patient to the local accident and emergency department Sign-post the patient to NHS 111 to register with a dental practice and book an emergency appointment Start oral antibiotics and analgesia
