Abstract

Answer E. Necrotising enterocolitis
Ischaemic damage and bacterial overgrowth can result in necrotising enterocolitis (NE). NE may be suspected with abdominal distension and blood in the stool. Progression to bowel perforation and clinical shock can occur. Treatment requires cessation of oral feeding, parental nutrition, circulatory and respiratory support. Broad-spectrum antibiotics are also often administered, but despite intensive treatment, NE carries a high morbidity and mortality.
