Abstract

Answer A. Women with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are advised not to breast feed
Women with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the UK are advised not to breastfeed because of the risk of transmission via breastmilk. Cabergoline can be offered to suppress lactation. There are instances where the mother does choose to breastfeed and this can be supported provided there has been viral suppression throughout the pregnancy and good adherence to anti-retroviral therapy. Patients must be fully aware of the low risk of transmission and agree to monthly testing for themselves and the baby.
