The UK MEC (medical eligibility criteria) set out guidelines on when it is safe and contraindicated to prescribe contraception. Ischaemic heart disease is a category 2 (the advantage of using the progesterone-only pill generally outweighs the risk). All the other conditions either constitute a category 3 (the risks of the progesterone-only pill outweigh the benefits and expert clinical advice should be sought) or a category 4 (representing an unacceptable risk).
