Abstract

Answer D. Methadone
For maintenance treatment, current evidence suggests that methadone is more likely to retain patients in treatment. However, the RCGP argue that evidence comparing the efficacy of methadone and buprenorphine at preventing illicit opioid misuse is mixed. If both drugs are equally suitable, then methadone is still considered the ‘gold standard’ by The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
