Abstract

InnovAiT is produced on a 3-year cycle. However, many articles do not significantly go out of date in that time. This section of InnovAiT summarises articles from the previous cycle of InnovAiT that GPs and GPs in training might still find useful today.
Lichen planus
Dr Laura Heath and Dr Rubeta Matin
InnovAiT 2017 10(3): 133–138
Lichen planus is a chronic, inflammatory disease affecting skin and mucous membranes and is mediated by T-cells. The classic presentation with violaceous, flat-topped macules and papules affecting flexures and extremities helps diagnosis. A thorough history is required to identify drug causes, but usually no cause can be identified. This article considers clinical presentation, diagnosis and management in primary care. Steroids are the mainstay of treatment. Longstanding mucosal disease has malignant potential.
Pruritus
Dr Thuvaraka Ware
InnovAiT 2017 10(3): 139–147
This is an unpleasant desire to scratch the skin and one of the most common skin complaints. It has many causes, some systemic in origin and can cause mood and sleep disturbance. Treatment is aimed at the underlying cause and managing symptoms. This article considers investigating and managing pruritus. It is important to recognise the itch–scratch cycle and holistic care is important.
Body contouring in the post-bariatric surgical patient
Miss Sameena Hasan, Ms Sharmila Jivan and Mr LeRoux Fourie
InnovAiT 2017 10(3): 148–155
With more treatment of obesity using bariatric surgery, there will be more patients needing help, advice and referral for body contouring. This article summarises important points in some detail giving the criteria for referral.
Health promotion and screening for people with an intellectual disability
Dr Hassan Awan and Dr Umesh Chauhan
InnovAiT 2017 10(3): 157–164
People with intellectual disability have worse health and more complex health needs than the unaffected population. Life expectancy is affected, and GPs have a role in addressing health inequalities through health promotion, disease prevention, screening and detection. This article provides detailed guidance on reducing barriers to healthcare, tips to improve consulting and highlights legal requirements to ensure equitable access to services.
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in adults
Dr Rakesh Magon
InnovAiT 2017 10(3): 165–172
This article discusses the clinical presentation of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults. It is common and associated with significant co-morbidities, relationship and parenting problems. The article details diagnosis, management and the key role of GPs.
Autism and Asperger’s syndrome
Dr Babu Kangesan
InnovAiT 2017 10(3): 173–177
This article covers challenges in diagnosis and management of autism in children and the rise in awareness over recent years. It considers signs, symptoms and the three most common areas of difficulty: Communication, social imagination and social interaction. Diagnosis is usually via secondary care or more specialist services.
Self-directed learning at the point of care
Dr Kieran Walsh
InnovAiT 2017 10(3): 178–182
This is a process in which individuals diagnose their learning needs, goals and resources for self-directed learning. It is a reflective process best learnt by doing and incorporates evidence-based methodology. It should improve point-of-care decision-making.
