Abstract

InnovAiT is produced on a 3-year cycle. However, many articles do not significantly go out of date in that time. This section of InnovAiT summarises articles from the previous cycle of InnovAiT that GPs and GPs in training might still find useful today.
Gastro-oesophageal reflux in infants
Dr Katharine J Pettinger
InnovAiT 2017 10(4): 197–201
Gastro-oesophageal reflux in infants is common and often parents seek advice from GPs. It ranges in severity from asymptomatic regurgitation to full gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). The range of opinions on treatment can cause problems, but this article gives clear advice on diagnosis and management to help GPs, focusing on the problem in children under 1 year of age.
Self-harm in adolescence
Dr Anna Paes
InnovAiT 2017 10(4): 202–208
Self-harm in adolescents is very common and a public health concern. Stigma, poor understanding, lack of training and patchy provision of services have all contributed to inadequate management by health professionals. This article aims to redress the balance and provides important information with advice on assessment and when to refer. Most self-harm is transient, does not present to medical services and inflicts little physical damage.
Childhood cancer in general practice: Is it really that rare?
Dr Jennifer Kelly
InnovAiT 2017 10(4): 209–217
Cancer is the biggest medical cause of death in children aged between 1 and 14 years. Incidence is rising, with 4000 cases annually or 11 cases diagnosed every day in the UK. This article aims to provide tools and knowledge to diagnose childhood cancer and outlines a framework to support children and their families in the community.
Antibiotic over-prescribing
Dr Laura James
InnovAiT 2017 10(4): 219–223
Antibiotics were developed for therapeutic use in the 1940s, saved many lives in the Second World War and have transformed medicine. The evolution of microbes in response to antibiotic exposure has rendered them increasingly ineffective. The majority of antibiotics in the NHS are prescribed in general practice. This article explores the challenge of prescribing fewer antibiotics without risking the safety of patients.
Zika
Dr Rabia Aftab
InnovAiT 2017 10(4): 224–227
Zika was discovered in 1947 and has emerged as a global health threat over the last decade. The World Health Organization declared a public health emergency of international concern in February 2016. This short feature article gives invaluable background information and practical advice on the topic, much of concern to travelling patients.
Ebola
Dr Rabia Aftab
InnovAiT 2017 10(4): 228–232
Ebola has a very high case fatality and several outbreaks of the disease have occurred in Central and West Africa. This article reviews the history, transmission, presentation, diagnosis and management with key messages for GPs.
Portfolio GP: Pre-hospital acute care opportunities

InnovAiT 2017 10(4): 233–240
This article helps shed some light on some of the many and varied jobs and opportunities available to GPs. The world is your oyster and this article barely opens the shell.
