A 21-year-old patient reports being sexually assaulted on a night out the day before consultation. She does not report any acute physical injuries. She declines a referral to the local sexual assault referral centre, she does not wish to report it to the police and prefers to be looked after at the surgery rather than the local emergency department or genitourinary clinic.
Initial sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening at 2 weeks and screening for blood-borne infections at 3 months Insist on a referral to a sexual assault referral centre (SARC) Perform a pelvic examination and obtain high vaginal swabs Prescribe antibiotics after discussion with the genitourinary clinic Start human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) post-exposure prophylaxis following sexual exposure (PEPSE)
