Abstract

Answer B. Advance statements
Advance care planning should encompass a discussion about the patient’s preferences for the type of care they want. Producing a document to this effect is helpful so that it is officially written down with less chance of miscommunication. There are several types of document. Advance statements include information that the person considers to be important so should be considered when decisions are being made but are not legally binding. Lasting power of attorneys gives other people legal authority to make decisions on behalf of a patient, which are legally binding. Advance decisions (including those around refusal of cardiopulmonary resuscitation) are also legally binding.
