Abstract

Answer D. Low-dose inhaled corticosteroid
If asthma with a chronic dry cough is suspected in a child, they may benefit from a trial of low-dose inhaled corticosteroid. This should be prescribed for 6–8 weeks and then stopped. A diagnosis of asthma can be considered if symptoms return. Cough suppressants, including codeine, should not be used in children under 12 years of age and antibiotics are not warranted here.
