Abstract

The next patient on your morning list is a 36-year-old man. From his clinical records you see that the last entry is from 3 years ago. He comes to see you to ask for prescriptions of sertraline, quetiapine and zopiclone, as he says he is about to run out. He explains that he has been in prison for the past 3 years, was released last week and is staying short-term at a probation hostel nearby. He tells you he was diagnosed with depression and anxiety and that these are his regular medications, all started by the prison doctor; however, he has no paperwork with him.
How would you respond to this request? What is being done nationally to improve continuity of care for patients going into and leaving prison? Are you aware of guidance for GPs, working in the community and in secure environments, serving this patient population?
