Abstract

Answer B. Repeat the 2-hour 75 g oral glucose tolerance test annually and if the patient becomes pregnant at 26–28 weeks
Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome are at increased risk of developing type II diabetes mellitus. The Royal College of Gynaecologists suggest that the following women should be invited for a 2-hour 75 g oral glucose tolerance test: Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome who are overweight (BMI >25 kg/m2), or women with polycystic ovarian syndrome who are not overweight (BMI <25 kg/m2) but who have additional risk factors such as age >40 years, previous history of gestational diabetes or family history of type II diabetes.
Those who are found to have impaired fasting glucose, or an impaired glucose tolerance should have their 2-hour 75 g oral glucose tolerance test repeated annually. Women should also be screened during their pregnancies at 26–28 weeks due to the increased risk of gestational diabetes.
