What is good about this book?
An inspirational story of assertiveness and courage, this book explores the reality of the commodification of young women destined for no more than a lifetime of serving men. Born in a rural Nigerian village, 14-year-old Adunni wants more. Challenging the status quo is rife with danger, yet Adunni's fervent desire for change and success allows her to bear the brunt of inevitable punishment with continued optimism, ultimately breaking the shackles that bind her. Not only is this book a beautiful reminder of hope and bravery, but also a salient reminder that sexism, misogyny and human trafficking remain a real problem worldwide. A nice break from traditional medical books, this text is a real page turner with an exceptionally important underlying message. With patients and colleagues from all walks of life, this book shines a light on the reality of social injustice, health inequality and the real devastation of lack of access to education. Adunni demonstrates just what can be achieved through grit and determination. What a movement of change we could create if we all used our ‘louding voice'. This book fans the flame of assurance in standing up against gender-based discrimination; Abi Dare has done an excellent job in conjuring up in the reader a healthy mix of anger, joy, frustration and optimism, in just the right amount. One finishes this book feeling empowered to stand up for what they believe in, while also being a voice for those who have none.
What is bad about this book?
The storyline is somewhat predictable in parts. However, this does work to offer the reader some light relief from what is otherwise a fairly heavy topic of discussion.
