Abstract

Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) replaced Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) in England from 1 July 2022. There are 42 ICBs in England. ICBs are responsible for meeting the health needs of the local population by tackling health inequalities, promoting value for money in health services, working with the voluntary sector and other partners, and helping the NHS meet its broader social and economic goals. ICBs aim to better integrate health services and promote local collaboration.
ICBs have their own leadership team, which is typically comprised of a chair and chief executive, members from primary care, secondary care, mental health services and local authorities.
As health is a devolved issue, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland organise their health care system differently. Scotland has 14 health boards (HB), Wales has seven local health boards (LHB) and Northern Ireland has five local commissioning groups (LCGs). These organisations serve a similar role to ICBs.
What is the name of your local ICB/HB/LHB/LCG? What geographical area do they serve? Do you know how to find information about your ICB, who is on the board and what issues they are currently addressing? Do you know of any decisions the ICB has made recently that have affected service provision or delivery in your area? If you are interested in population health or health management/leadership, is there a way you could get more involved? For example, are you able to attend an ICB meeting?
