Abstract

Answer B. Anything up to 10% is considered acceptable weight loss in the first week of life
In the first days after birth, a small amount of weight loss is normal. Anything up to 10% is generally considered acceptable in the first week of life, with fewer than 5% of infants losing more than this. Eighty per cent will have regained their birthweight by 2 weeks of life. If weight loss is greater than this or is slow to recover, then careful clinical assessment and evaluation of feeding needs to take place.
