SPTS Presents 2012 Awards
The SPTS Awards Reception and Ceremony is one of the highlights of the Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) each year, when we gather to honor those who have made remarkable contributions to the section and the field of sports physical therapy. This year’s award ceremony was held on February 10, 2012, at the Red Lacquer Room of the Palmer House Hotel, Chicago, Illinois.
Attendees were welcomed by Barbara Sanders, chair of the Awards Committee, with opening remarks presented by Tim Tyler, SPTS president. Recognition of sports clinical specialists and 25-year members was offered by Rob Manske, SPTS vice president, and recognition of newly credentialed and recredentialed sports residency programs was presented by John DeWitt, chair of the Residency and Fellowship Special Interest Group.
Legacy Fund Grant Awards
Awarded to Lane Bailey, DPT, CSCS, for “The Acute Effects of Manual Therapy in Asymptomatic Throwers with Posterior Shoulder Tightness.”
Awarded to Stephanie L. Di Stasi, PT, PhD, OCS, for “The Functional Performance and Neuromuscular Profile of Athletes With FAI Before and Six Months After Hip Arthroscopy.”

Congratulations to Recently Credentialed Residency Programs!
Please help us congratulate Brenda Mahlum of the University of Montana and Anne Marie Husk, Bob Bruzga, and Dan Dore of Duke University on their successful sports physical therapy residency credentialing.
With these 2 programs, the total number of credentialed sports residency/fellowship programs increases to 21.
TeamMates Reception at CSM Enormous Success
The First-Timer’s Breakfast is a tradition for SPTS at CSM. TeamMates was introduced at CSM 2011 and was so well received that TeamMates at TCC was introduced in December. Over 50 first-timers, students, and young professionals met with SPTS mentors for this event.
Students, those who are new to sports physical therapy, and those who are attending their first CSM are invited to partner with seasoned members who attend Sports Section programming regularly. New members are called “rookies,” and the seasoned members are referred to as “captains.” Rookie and captain TeamMates receive contact information and introductions via e-mail prior to attending CSM to “meet” each other in advance, then have the opportunity to meet face-to-face at the event.
At CSM 2012, an estimated 150 people flooded the single-room reception, requiring the opening of an additional room. Still, there were people chatting in the hallways up to the 8
National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA)
The NATA will host its 63rd Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposia, June 26-29, 2012, in St Louis, Missouri. The meeting will feature important educational advances, career networking, and association business, as well as the NATA trade show, the largest display of athletic training supplies and services in the country. This year’s keynote speaker will be J. R. Martinez—actor, spokesman, and retired soldier.

AMSSM Recent Board Elections
AMSSM held elections for its Board of Directors in February. Members elected Christopher Madden as second vice president. Matt Gammons and Mark Stovak were voted onto the Board of Directors for a second term. Chad Asplund, Anthony Beutler, Neeru Jayanthi, and Verle Valentine were elected as new board members.
ECG Summit
AMSSM vice president Jonathan Drezner hosted an ECG Summit of international sports medicine and sports cardiology experts in February. The group is working to outline standards for the interpretation of screening ECGs in athletes. These experts will use the criteria developed at the summit to develop an online training that will serve as a resource for sports medicine physicians interested in improving their skill level in reading ECGs.
CJSM-AMSSM Concussion Webinar
Over 1900 health care providers registered for the live webinar “Concussion to Consequence: Managing Sport-Related Concussion on and off the Field,” featuring AMSSM past president Margot Putukian. The presentation reviews the latest evidence on management and long-term effects of sports concussion. As of mid-February, the webinar had received over 1200 views.
