The AASPT honored members at its 2020 awards ceremony, held Friday, February 14, at the Hyatt Regency Denver.
Joe Black, PT, DPT, ATC, was presented with the Ronald G. Peyton Award, AASPT’s highest award. Inducted into the Turner A. Blackburn Lifetime Achievement Hall of Fame were Teresa Schuemann, PT, DPT, ATC, RISPT; Ed Mulligan, PT, DPT, ATC; and Mark Reinking, PT, MPT, ATC, PhD. Other honorees included Kerry Mullenix, PT, ATC, The Lynn Wallace Clinical Education and Professional Development Award; Shefali Christopher, DPT, PhD, Excellence in Education; Jarrod Harrall, DO, The Jack C. Hughston Sports Physician Award; Julia Rapicavoli, PT, DPT, ATC, New Horizon Award; Lindsey Wade, PT, DPT, ATC, Student of the Year; and Marisa Pontillo, PT, DPT, PhD, Shoulder SIG Chair, Special Interest Group of the Year.
Also presented was The Legacy Fund New Investigator Research Grant Awards for “Maladaptive Psychosocial Beliefs and Adolescents With Patellofemoral Pain” to Mitchell Selhorst, DPT, Laura Schmitt, PT, PhD, Jessica Hoehn, PhD, and Alicia Fernandez-Fernandez, DPT, PhD. The AASPT Excellence in Research Award was presented for “Prospective Validation and Responsiveness of the University of Wisconsin Running Injury and Recovery Index” to Evan Nelson, DPT, PhD, Stephanie Kliethermes, PhD, and Bryan Heiderscheit, PT, PhD, FAPTA.
The evening awards were completed with the publication awards. The JOSPT George J. Davies—James A. Gould Excellence in Clinical Inquiry Award was presented for “The Potential Role of the Cervical Spine in Sports-Related Concussion: Clinical Perspectives and Considerations for Risk Reduction” to Michael Streifer, Allison M. Brown, Tara Porfido, Ellen Zambo Anderson, Jennifer Buckman, and Carrie Esopenko. The JOSPT Guy G. Simoneau Excellence in Research Award was given for “Immediate and Short-term Effects of Thoracic Spine Manipulation in Patients With Cervical Radiculopathy: A Randomized Controlled Trial” to Ian A. Young, Federico Pozzi, James Dunning, Richard Linkonis, and Lori A. Michener. The IJSPT Original Research Award was given to Terry L. Grindstaff et al for “Validity of Hand-Held Dynamometry in Measuring Quadriceps Strength and Rate of Torque Development.” The IJSPT Case Study Award went to Zaki Afzal et al for “Return to Advanced Strength Training and Weightlifting in an Athlete Post-Lumbar Discectomy Utilizing Pain Neuroscience Education and Proper Progression: Resident’s Case Report.”

The Athlete’s Hip: New Trends, Controversies, and Contemporary Surgical Management

The aim of the course is to provide a greater understanding of normal and pathological states of the athlete’s hip. The course will provide a complete overview of the evaluation, nonsurgical treatment, and surgical correction of the athlete’s hip in all compartments: central, peripheral, peritrochanteric, and posterior. Integration of clinical expertise from outstanding local and national faculty with the best-available clinical evidence into the decision-making process for patient care will be presented to address clinical challenges relevant to everyday practice. The psychomotor skills portion of the course will provide attendees a clear rationale and practical treatment algorithms to address both simple and complex hip pathologies.

The website is now up for the 71st NATA Clinical Symposia & AT Expo June 17-20 in Atlanta. The NATA convention is the largest gathering of ATs in the world. Every year, thousands of ATs attend the NATA convention to learn, celebrate, and connect with other ATs as well as see the newest sports medicine products and services. While the convention offers professional development on a variety of topics, 4 themes have been selected for NATA 2020: training load, biometrics/analytics, motor learning/motor behavior, and heat. After the success of NATA’s 2019 Own Your Impact campaign, the association is continuing the conversation in 2020 with the Health Care in Action campaign. Throughout this year-long campaign, NATA will provide resources to members that help them tell their stories as health care providers and advocates. This includes the “20 Things to Do in 2020” list, which consists of action items all ATs can complete to advocate for themselves and the profession. The goal is to continue to emphasize the important role ATs play in health care and wellness in work, life, and sport.
