This issue showcases the dynamic and evolving nature of futures studies, highlighting innovative approaches, methodological advancements, and practical applications across various domains. The articles in this collection demonstrate the field’s commitment to rigorous analysis, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the development of tools that can help navigate an increasingly complex and uncertain world.

Our opening piece by Hines, Puddy, and Vincent provides a compelling case study of integrating foresight into a major public health organization. Their article, “Establishing a Strategic Foresight Learning and Action Network (SF-LAN) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),” outlines a six-step Foresight Integration Model. This practical framework offers valuable insights for organizations seeking to embed futures thinking into their operations. The authors candidly discuss both successes and challenges, emphasizing the importance of demonstrating tangible benefits to gain broader acceptance within science-driven institutions.

Van der Duin and Snijders tackle the crucial question of how to tailor futures studies to diverse user needs in their article “Designing ‘futures studies journeys’.” By examining Dutch governmental advisory councils and planning agencies, they propose a contingency framework that links user goals to different approaches, policy process phases, and methodologies. Their work underscores the importance of context-specific design in futures studies and opens up new avenues for research on the positioning of futures work in policy processes across different political systems and cultures.

Abdul Wahab’s bibliometric analysis, “Two Decades of Causal Layered Analysis: A Bibliometric Analysis and Review (2000–2022),” offers a comprehensive overview of the evolution and impact of Causal Layered Analysis (CLA), which has become a prominent method in the field. This study not only highlights the growing importance of CLA as a method for addressing complex societal challenges but also provides valuable insights into the field’s publication trends, leading contributors, and areas of application.

Spaniol’s article, “Organizing foresight tools,” presents a novel framework for selecting appropriate foresight tools based on levels and loci of uncertainty. This work addresses a persistent challenge in the field – the difficulty of choosing the right tool for a given context. By mapping foresight tools onto an “uncertainty landscape,” Spaniol offers practitioners a structured approach to tool selection that could significantly enhance the impact of foresight investments.

In “A movement matured,” Dayé provides a fascinating bibliometric analysis of recent publications in futures studies. His work reveals the intellectual structure of the field, identifying four main clusters of literature and demonstrating the high degree of interconnectedness between these areas. Dayé's interpretation suggests that futures studies has successfully matured as a field while retaining its political thrust and ability to generate diverse future visions.

Collectively, these articles reflect the vibrant state of futures studies as both an academic discipline and a practical endeavor. They showcase the field’s ongoing efforts to refine its methodologies, expand its applications, and deepen its theoretical foundations. From the integration of foresight into large organizations to the development of sophisticated tools for uncertainty analysis, this issue demonstrates the diverse ways in which futures studies continues to evolve and contribute to our understanding of possible, probable, and preferable futures.
