Abstract

For a significant period of time activism and public relations were positioned as polar opposites within public relations literature. Indeed, the existence of activists was posited as a justification for public relations practitioners and the issues and crisis management functions. Activism has become of increasing interest to public relations academics as books by Holtzhausen (2011) and Demetrious (2013) demonstrate. This Special Issue seeks to encourage in-depth theoretical and empirical analyses of the relationships among and between public relations, activism and social movements that challenge established views, approaches and methodologies. Of particular interest are submissions that entail historical, archaeological, sociological, ethnographic, auto-ethnographic, discursive approaches. Interdisciplinary work, for example from a media studies perspective is also welcomed, particularly for submissions that explore networks and converged media dynamics.
Submissions should be uploaded on the website and clearly identified as ‘Special Issue: public relations, activism and social movements: critical perspectives’ by 1 October 2015. The Special Issue will be published in volume 5(2) 2016.
