Abstract

The German Journal of Human Resource Management (GHRM) has further continued to grow and to establish itself in the international realm of human resource management journals. The former German journal Zeitschrift für Personalforschung (ZfP), which has been published in English by SAGE since 2016, can again report an increasing 5-year impact factor well above 1 (1.542), and we are particularly proud that the journal’s 2-year impact factor is also well above 1 (1.367). This year’s submissions will have reached nearly 330 by the end of December 2021, which continues a growth trend for several years now. This very positive development is also recognised by the positioning of the GHRM in international rankings. The journal has recently been confirmed as a two star journal in the British ABS and has been identified by the Australian Business Deans Council Ranking (ABDC) as a B journal since 2019.
Important contributions to the positive development of the journal are the annually published Special Issues. This year’s topic, which has attracted a high number of submissions, was “Always On, Never Done? How the Mind Recovers After a Stressful Work Day” (guest-edited by Johannes Wendsche, Jessica de Bloom, Christine Syrek and Tim Vahle-Heinz). The next Special Issue of the GHRM, in 2022, will cover the topic “Working from home: What it means to individuals, leaders, organizing and human resource practices” (guest-edited by Rachel Cohen, Stephan Kaiser, Elisabeth Naima Mikkelsen, Anne Pedersen and Stefan Süß). We are grateful to the guest editorial team members for their immense engagement and enthusiastic work on these particular publications.
Fortunately, Hannes Zacher and Cort W. Rudolph accepted our invitation to contribute an article in which they reflect upon “Researching employee experiences and behavior in times of crisis.” Their theoretical and methodological considerations on this timely and highly relevant topic provide illuminating insights into the implications of crises for HRM research.
In 2021, the Editor-in-Chief team changed. After 3 years of excellent work for the GHRM, Marion Festing ended her term at the helm, and the GHRM community would like to express their big gratitude to her. Marion has always been strongly dedicated to the journal and its further development, striving to be at the service of all stakeholders—associate editors, editorial board members, authors, and our publisher Sage. She has been a main driver of the journal’s internationalization and we benefit a lot from her international academic networks and engagement. Together with Jaime Bonache, Marion even co-edited a successful and influential Special Issue on “Research Paradigms in International Human Resource Management” during her service as Editor-in-Chief. She closely cooperated with the former Editor-in-Chief, Renate Ortlieb, and with the current Editor-in-Chief, Axel Haunschild, shared her enthusiasm for the journal and its topics and was always prepared to engage in critical discussions and provide intellectual inspiration. We are both grateful that Marion has also supported us strongly in the transition period at the EIC board since summer 2021, and we are very pleased that she will retain her affiliation with GHRM as a member of the editorial team.
Jürgen Wegge follows Marion Festing and joined the Editors-in-Chief team in October 2021, working now together with Axel Haunschild. Jürgen has supported GHRM for many years, first as an editorial board member (2010–2014) and then as an associate editor (2014–2021). He is Professor of Work and Organisational Psychology at Technische Universität Dresden and has published widely in leading international journals. His major goal is to maintain the high quality standards of GHRM articles and, together with Axel Haunschild, to develop further the international reach and positioning of the journal.
We are glad and feel honored that Torsten Biemann, Julia Brandl, Helen de Cieri, Fabian Jintae Froese, and Hannes Zacher joined as new Associate Editors who enrich our editorial team with their expertise, experience, and ideas. We also warmly welcome our new Editorial Board Members Bernadette Bullinger, Marjaana Gunkel, Monika Hamori, Sven Hauff, Markus Helfen, Christina Hoon, Anja Iseke, and Lena Knappert.
It is very sad news that David Marsden, London School of Economics, member of the Editorial Board of GHRM, died unexpectedly on Tuesday 10 August 2021. David was an extremely supportive, open-minded, and kind-hearted colleague who also was a strong promotor of Anglo-German co-operations in the field of Industrial Relations and HRM. We will always remember him as a great colleague and friend.
As with all journals, the GHRM can only develop and grow thanks to the strong backing of the scientific community. We would like to thank our colleagues, all experts in their fields, for voluntarily contributing their time to improving the journal. Our associate editors as well as our reviewers did a tremendous job helping authors with constructive feedback to increase the overall quality of contributions. For their valuable reviewer engagement in 2021, we thank:

While the journal has experienced very positive development in recent years, there are more challenges ahead to make Volume 36 in 2022 a success. We continue to welcome submissions of original work in all areas covered by GHRM and we look forward to working closely together with Sage, our associate editors and all editorial board members and new reviewers that share and promote the vision of GHRM—advancing scientific knowledge related to human resource management, employment relations, behavior in organisations, and personnel economics.
