Abstract
Based on previous reviews, we have a synthesized understanding of the how and what to teach in entrepreneurship education (EE). In contrast, we find fragmented and differing insights on the who in EE (i.e., the triad of internal stakeholders of students, educators and educational institutes hosting EE). Inspired by stakeholder theory, our study presents a systematic literature review on the role of stakeholder-related factors for effective EE. Specifically, based on 59 empirical articles published between 1995 and 2019, we provide an overview on the current state of literature on the role of stakeholder-related factors in EE research, synthesize findings, identify research gaps and develop a future research agenda as well as derive implications for the design and implementation of EE. In doing so, we provide a theoretical perspective to stimulate future research on stakeholder-related factors for EE to be effective.
Over the last decade, we observe a rise of entrepreneurship education (EE) around the globe. EE takes place at different education levels with different entrepreneurial courses or programs setting different foci. For example, some programs focus on the transfer of entrepreneurial knowledge as well as on the development of entrepreneurial attitudes and skills to build up personal capabilities for creating and managing a business venture (Fayolle et al., 2006b). Other programs aim to support students in creating an entrepreneurial mindset (Kirby, 2007) or to improve an existing business venturing and thus, to increase the number of successful entrepreneurs (Matlay, 2006). In general, we refer to EE as any single course or educational program, which involves disseminating entrepreneurial knowledge and/or developing entrepreneurial capabilities for creating and managing a new business venture (Bae et al., 2014; Fayolle et al., 2006b).
Across the years, EE has successfully established itself as an emerging sub-field in management research (Matlay & Jones, 2011) and moved beyond the ontological argument for the existence of EE, i.e., can entrepreneurship be taught, to focus on how to teach and what to teach in EE (Kuratko, 2005). In line with this trend, several systematic reviews aggregate our knowledge on these questions of how and what to teach in EE. Extant reviews focus on the following aspects: generic objectives, teaching methods, and impact indicators used in EE (Samwel Mwasalwiba, 2010), EE impact on entrepreneurial human capitals (Martin et al., 2013), the relationship between EE and entrepreneurial intention (Bae et al., 2014), research methodologies and design of EE research (Blenker et al., 2014; Longva & Foss, 2018; Lorz et al., 2013; Rideout & Gray, 2013), curricula contents and teaching methods used in EE (Sirelkhatim & Gangi, 2015), or the relationship between teaching methods and EE outcomes (Nabi et al., 2017).
Even though we have, based on the above-mentioned systematic reviews, extensive knowledge on the how and what to teach in EE, research so far has not explored conclusively the effectiveness of EE. In fact, we still lack a comprehensive explanation for inconclusive and fragmented results regarding EE impact (Bae et al., 2014; Longva & Foss, 2018; Martin et al., 2013; Nabi et al., 2017). Furthermore, extant research not only covers research questions on the how and what, but also on other aspects of EE, e.g., the who in EE. Inspired by stakeholder theory (Freeman, 1984, 2010), we aim to aggregate extant knowledge on the role of the who in EE, i.e., the stakeholders directly involved in EE, to develop further a holistic understanding of effective EE.
Originally a management theory for business organizations, stakeholder theory posits that every organization must focus on the management of key stakeholders to achieve successfully its mission, e.g., to function more effectively and create more value (Freeman, 2010). Based on stakeholder theory, we propose that, to make EE effective, key stakeholders must be taken into account, and thus it is stakeholder-related factors that are decisive for EE effectiveness. Following Amaral and Magalhães (2002), we define a key stakeholder involved in EE as a person or entity with a legitimate interest in the implementation and outcomes of EE and with the right to intervene. We zoom in on three key EE stakeholders: students, educators, and educational institutes hosting EE. Our focus on the role of EE stakeholders is in line with Matlay and Jones (2011, p. 701), who argue that effective EE “has less to do with transferable teaching techniques” (the how) or “standardized curricula” (the what) but rather “emerges from the unique dialogic relationships that exist between students, educators, educational process, institutions” (the who). Taken together, inspired by stakeholder theory, we conduct a systematic literature review (SLR) on studies investigating the influence of student-related, educator-related, and institute-related factors on EE outcomes. Specifically, we examine if stakeholder-related factors have an impact and if these factors interact to affect EE outcomes, thereby exploring how and under which circumstance stakeholder-related factors drive effective EE.
First, students in EE are intended direct beneficiaries, thus effective EE depends on student-related factors such as, for example, students’ gender (Packham et al., 2010; Wilson et al., 2007), age (Ahmed et al., 2017), or personal characteristics like prior entrepreneurial experience (Hahn et al., 2017; Lyons & Zhang, 2018). In consequence, we understand student-related factors as biographical characteristics that permanently pertain to students (e.g., age, sex), and personal characteristics (e.g., work experience). Second, with students on the one side, educators are on the other side of EE. Thus, EE effectiveness also depends on educator-related factors, e.g., educators’ prior experience (Abaho et al., 2015; Diegoli et al., 2018). Similar to student-related factors, we understand educator-related factors as biographical characteristics as well as personal characteristics, e.g., prior experience or educational background. Finally, we account for institute-related factors defined in the context of this study as characteristics that are inherently connected to educational institutes hosting EE, for example, type of educational institutes, i.e., private or public (Athayde, 2009), or aspects determined by educational institutes, e.g., incubation support for students (Souitaris et al., 2007). Overall, our SLR is guided by three research questions:
(RQ1). What student-related, educator-related, and institute-related factors are investigated in EE research?
(RQ2). How and when do these stakeholder-related factors play a role for effective EE?
(RQ3). What research gaps exist and thus, what directions should future EE research follow?
Answering these questions allows us to contribute to the literature. First, despite having extensive knowledge about the how and what, we lack a holistic view on factors related to the who in EE, which should be taken into account to improve our understanding of effective EE. Our SLR aggregates extant knowledge on the relevance of stakeholder-related factors for effective EE. In doing so, we draw a knowledge map highlighting which stakeholder-related factors have been studied by extant literature, generate collective insights about the role of these factors for EE effectiveness, and thereby provide a theoretical perspective to extend and expand our understanding of effective EE. Second, extant findings from single studies on the who in EE are disconnected, leading to the currently fragmented picture of which role stakeholder-related factors play for effective EE, and accordingly hinders further investigation in the field. Hence, our SLR aggregates empirical evidence regarding the influence of stakeholder-related factors on EE outcomes. Doing so enables us to point out critical research gaps alongside directions to inform and stimulate future research on effective EE. From a practical perspective, our study provides important implications for the design and implementation of EE.
Method
Our SLR follows the general logic suggested by Tranfield et al. (2003) and Pickering and Byrne (2014) to synthesize the literature in a transparent, unbiased und reproducible manner. Specifically, we followed the following procedure: (1) Define the review topic and formulate research questions, (2) formulate search terms, (3) search on relevant databases with formal restrictions (e.g., language) and remove duplicate articles, (4) develop inclusion and exclusion criteria, (5) remove irrelevant articles based on the exclusion criteria from abstract review, (6) conduct full-text review for the remaining ones to select articles for the final sample, and (7) analyze and synthesize findings from sampled articles.
First, to understand the role of stakeholders for effective EE, articles are of relevance that investigate the influence of stakeholder-related factors on EE outcomes.
Second, to find relevant articles, we developed our search terms, which are based on a list of subject terms collected from EE research articles published from 2012 to 2016 in the top five leading entrepreneurship journals: Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Small Business Management, Small Business Economics, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal. Besides, we used additional search terms proposed in most recent literature (e.g., Bae et al., 2014, Nabi et al., 2017, Longva & Foss, 2018). For details on the search terms applied, see Appendix A. We drew on these search terms to search in titles of peer-reviewed articles written in English published before 1.1.2020 on two research databases: EBSCO and JSTOR and received 656 hits. We removed 70 duplicate articles leading to a sample of 586 articles.
Third, we searched the reference list of most recent SLRs in EE (e.g., Bae et al., 2014; Longva & Foss, 2018; Nabi et al., 2017), to identify further articles. Based on this additional search we included further 58 articles, leading to a sample of 644 articles.
Fourth, we screened the titles and abstracts of these 644 articles using the following inclusion and exclusion criteria to decide upon each article for further consideration. To be included in our SLR, a study had to meet all of the following three inclusion criteria: (1) an original, empirical research article published in a peer-reviewed journal; (2) focus on EE aimed at disseminating entrepreneurial knowledge and/or developing entrepreneurial capabilities for creating and managing a new business venture; and (3) investigation of at least one stakeholder-related factor. Thus, we excluded articles of theoretical, conceptual or review nature, conference papers, articles focusing on other specific types of EE, articles focusing on non-stakeholder-related factors or articles that neither investigate nor discuss EE outcomes. Due to this title and abstract review, we had to exclude 285 articles.
Fifth, we read the full text of the remaining 359 articles also applying the aforementioned inclusion and exclusion criteria. As a result, we had to exclude further 300 articles, leading to our final sample of 59 articles for our SLR (see Figure 1 for an overview of the sample selection steps).

Sixth, for data analyses, we used MaxQDA 2018 to code, interpret and synthesize our sampled articles. We structured out database by entering all sampled articles for which we created a system of categories (e.g., stakeholder-related factors investigated or EE outcomes), and sub-categories using codes. We started with basic descriptive codes such as year of publication, location of research, educational level. Then, we drew on thematic codes developed based on our research questions to capture detailed relevant information and findings for data synthesis. Consequently, we developed a hierarchical coding system by aggregating subcodes where applicable.
Results—Descriptive Summary
Overall, the final sample covers 24 years ranging from 1995 to 2019 and consists of 59 articles published by 35 different journals across a wide range of fields (see Appendix B). This observation indicates EE as an interdisciplinary field and confirms that “we are still struggling as a discipline to define what EE actually is” (Liguori et al., 2018, p. 5).
With regard to the educational level investigated, most studies focus solely on higher education (HE) (84.7%) and some studies on the secondary education level (5.1%). In addition, two studies (3.4%) simultaneously zoom in on the secondary and HE levels; and four studies (6.8%) do not specify their focus and thus are categorized as “Other” (see Appendix C).
We also find that the sampled articles differ with regard to their data’s geographical focus. Overall, the studies rest on data from 33 different countries, of which United States is the most often investigated (20.9%). Because of this geographic fragmentation, we further clustered the geographical location based on income level into the following groups: High-income and upper-middle-income, which represent developed countries, as well as lower-middle-income and low-income, which define developing countries. Overall, 80.6% of the sampled studies investigate developed countries while 16.9% focus on developing countries; the remaining 4.5% of studies analyze data across both classification types.
Results—Synthesis of Empirical Studies on the Who in EE
Diving into the who, i.e. the stakeholders investigated in EE research, 55 articles (93.2%) of the sampled articles concentrate on one of the three stakeholders. Of these, 40 articles (67.8%) focus on student-related factors, twelve articles (20.3%) investigate institute-related factors, and three studies (5.1%) dive into educator-related aspects. Further, some studies simultaneously investigate two stakeholders: three articles (5.1%) examine student- and institute-related factors and one study (1.7%) deals with educator- and student-related factors. Extant research does not account for the educator-educational institute relationship or for the student-educator-educational institute relation. (For an overview of sampled articles, refer to Appendix D).
Conceptualization of EE Outcome
Following the logic of stakeholder theory, different stakeholders in EE show different expectations and follow different objectives. Thus, depending on the stakeholder perspective taken, EE effectiveness should be investigated differently and different EE outcomes should be applied. Thus, we investigate whether there is a category system of EE outcomes in articles on the who in EE (see Table 1). Across all sampled articles, we find that researchers focus on cognitive, affective, conative or behavioral EE outcomes. However, with regard to these categories, different studies apply different outcome variables. Further, we realize that, even though based on stakeholder theory, different stakeholders follow different objectives with EE, the sampled articles do not show differences with regard to the general assessment of EE effectiveness.

Role of Student-Related Factors
Biographical Characteristics
EE studies investigating students’ biographical characteristics focus on either gender, ethnicity or age (see Appendix E).
First, we find that the role of students’ gender in EE depends on the type of EE outcome investigated. We suggest gender role theory (Eagly, 1987) as a theoretical lens to explain the varying results for gender. On the one hand, based on gender role theory (Early, 1987), we know that social expectations for appropriate behaviors of individuals differ between women and men, thereby career choice and development. In general, an entrepreneurial career is associated with masculine characteristics. Thus, males should be more open to entrepreneurial behavior. In fact, several studies find that EE has a greater positive effect on entrepreneurial intention for male students than for females (Lange et al., 2011; Shinnar et al., 2014; Y. Zhang et al., 2014). Some researchers even find a positive effect of EE on entrepreneurial intention only for male students and no effect or even a negative effect for female students (Walter et al., 2013; Westhead & Solesvik, 2016). On the other hand, from gender role theory we derive the premise that entrepreneurial behavior is perceived as masculine behavior, thereby explaining why women often lack awareness of becoming an entrepreneur as a potential career choice. Consequently, EE could make women more aware of the value and opportunity of an entrepreneurial career, and thus exert a stronger influence on affective EE outcomes for female students than for male students. For example, Jones et al. (2011) demonstrate a stronger positive impact of EE on entrepreneurial attitude for female students than for male students (see also D’Souza et al., 2018; Harris et al., 2007). Further, as being an entrepreneur is generally considered a male job, females are naturally less confident and have lower self-efficacy in their entrepreneurial capabilities (Barakat et al., 2014; Wilson et al., 2007). Consequently, EE has a greater impact for female students than for male students on cognitive outcomes such as entrepreneurial self-efficacy (Barakat et al., 2014; Wilson et al., 2007) or entrepreneurial skills and knowledge (Johansen, 2017) as well as perceived entrepreneurial behavior control (Entrialgo & Iglesias, 2017). While the above-mentioned studies find these positive EE impacts for females, other studies provide evidence that this is not always the case. For example, some studies find a greater positive EE impact for male students than for female students on entrepreneurial knowledge (Hahn et al., 2017) and on self-confidence in entrepreneurial capabilities (Ahmed et al., 2017). Others do not find a gender role for EE impact on entrepreneurial attitude (Hatten & Ruhland, 1995), on entrepreneurial intention (Bae et al., 2014) or on business ownership (Fairlie et al., 2015).
Second, a few studies investigate the role of students’ ethnicity for effective EE. Lyons and Zhang (2017) argue that compared to majority ethnic students, minority ethnic students belong to a socially disadvantaged group, who face more barriers to enter entrepreneurial careers. Here, EE can “help mitigate some of the systematic barriers to entrepreneurship” (Lyons & Zhang, 2017, p. 304). In fact, EE has a stronger positive impact on entrepreneurial attitude for minority ethnic students (Harris et al., 2007) and thus, exerts a greater impact on their likelihood of pursuing entrepreneurial careers (Lyons & Zhang, 2017).
Third, with regard to age, extant studies point out that EE appears to be more effective for younger (vs. older) students on affective and cognitive EE outcomes. Following Gielnik et al. (2018), we synthesize two factors to explain the role of age in EE: prior entrepreneurial experience and future time perspective. First, as life experience typically increases with age, older students could possess larger entrepreneurship-related human capital. Thus, for younger people with less entrepreneurship-related human capital, there is more room for EE to improve their entrepreneurial knowledge and skills. Second, younger students have a more extensive “future time perspective” to decide on their career path, i.e., their perceptions of the remaining time before they decide which career to follow (e.g., being an entrepreneur vs. working for others). Thus, older people with reduced future time perspective are less likely to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities as they consider it may take several years to get an entrepreneurial project off the ground (Gielnik et al., 2018). Consequently, it is more difficult for EE to help older students establish a positive entrepreneurial attitude. Indeed, extant studies show that EE is more effective for younger (vs. older) students on entrepreneurial attitudes (Hatten & Ruhland, 1995) and on entrepreneurial knowledge (Hahn et al., 2017).
Personal Characteristics
EE research on the role of students’ personal characteristics has focused on different factors: students’ family background, prior experience, educational background, learning motivation, or entrepreneurial passion.
First, there are several studies investigating the role of students’ family background with regard to entrepreneurial experience for EE effectiveness (see Appendix E). We observe that findings are inconclusive as studies operationalize family background differently. Several studies measure family background as a dichotomous variable, i.e. they compare EE impact for students with entrepreneurial family background and their peers without such a background (e.g., Hatten & Ruhland, 1995; Lange et al., 2011; Hahn et al., 2017). Here, we argue that the inconclusive findings result from the fact that not the entrepreneurial family background per se but accompanied aspects such as positivity, e.g., whether students have good or bad experiences of witnessing their parents’ business operation or the perceived parents’ work-life-balance, influence EE effectiveness. In case students have negative experiences because of observing their parents’ mental stress or business failures, a negative impact in EE may occur, potentially by reactivating negative feelings from childhood and this reactivation might hinder EE from improving entrepreneurial attitude and even leads to a reduction of entrepreneurial intention.
Second, extant studies investigate the role of students’ prior experience. Our SLR reveals three types of students’ experience investigated: entrepreneurial experience, international experience, and work experience (see Appendix E). Several studies support that students’ entrepreneurial experience, i.e. students’ prior experience of founding a new business, helps enhance EE impact on cognitive outcomes such as entrepreneurial knowledge (Hahn et al., 2017) or entrepreneurial capabilities (Kirkwood et al., 2014). Still, there are conflicting results on other types of outcomes. For example, Lange et al. (2011) point out that students with entrepreneurial experience are more likely to become entrepreneurs, but Fairlie et al. (2015) cannot find the effect on business ownership. Peterman and Kennedy (2003) take on a broader view integrating different types of prior exposure to entrepreneurship, i.e., having entrepreneurial parents or other entrepreneurial role models, having experience of founding a business or working for a start-up, which they term “breadth of entrepreneurial experience”. They also account for the positivity of such experience, i.e., whether students’ prior experience is positive or negative. Interestingly, they find that it is not the breadth but the positivity of students’ prior exposure to entrepreneurship, which plays a role for EE to be effective (Peterman & Kennedy, 2003). In contrast to Peterman and Kennedy (2003), most extant studies use a dichotomous variable to measure each type of experience, i.e., to compare EE impact on students with and their peers without the respective experience. This is likely an explanation for why extant findings on the role of work experience as well as international experience in EE are fragmented and inconsistent, as Peterman and Kennedy (2003) discover, the factor that actually matters is whether students enjoy or dislike the experience.
Third, extant literature has looked at the role of students’ educational background in the EE context. Here, findings are inconclusive (see Appendix E). In fact, EE is increasingly offered not only to business students but also to students of various disciplines. Whereas entrepreneurship modules come more naturally to business students, this is not the case for other majors’ students, resulting potentially in other pedagogical needs from the same EE educators. Thus, to have a more comprehensive understanding on role of students’ educational background in EE, researchers should consider a more holistic framework and move away from solely investigating students’ educational background to account for their background in interaction with the type of educator and type of EE (characterized by course objectives, curriculum and teaching methods). Such a holistic approach is likely leading to more comprehensive insights and thus may provide us with an explanation for why extant findings on the role of students’ educational inconclusive.
Finally, regarding the role of students’ motivational drivers, Ulla et al. (2010) point at a negative effect of intrinsic learning motivation, but at a positive impact of extrinsic learning motivation on learning outcomes, i.e. students’ generated business ideas. Further, among students participating in EE, those with stronger entrepreneurial passion show stronger learning outcomes with regard to entrepreneurial knowledge and skills (Mets et al., 2017), are more inclined to become entrepreneurs (Turner & Gianiodis, 2018) or show higher entrepreneurial intention (Zarafshani et al., 2011) than students with less entrepreneurial passion. See Appendix E for a summary of research findings on student-related factors.
Roles of Educator-Related Factors
In total, four empirical studies investigate the role of educators on the EE – EE outcome relation, all at HE level (see Appendix F), showing the relevance of educators for effective EE. Specifically, Otache (2019) finds that EE taught by educators who are more entrepreneurially minded generates a greater impact on students ‘entrepreneurial intention. In a similar vein, research shows that educator’ business experience as well as their entrepreneurial experience drives students’ entrepreneurial self-efficacy (Abaho et al., 2015) or entrepreneurial intention (Diegoli et al., 2018) and even assist students in solving practical problems in the transition to become entrepreneurs (Toumi & Smida, 2018).
Roles of Institute-Related Factors
Overall, we find that EE studies investigating factors related to educational institutes focus on three institute-related factors: incubation support, characteristics of educational institutes, and program models to deliver EE (see Appendix G).
First, incubation support refers to additional support for students to engage in entrepreneurship by educational institutes, e.g., incubation resources (Jansen et al., 2015; Souitaris et al., 2007). Extant findings on the role of incubation support in EE are contradictory. On the one hand, we find evidence that incubation support can enable a positive EE impact on entrepreneurial intention (Jansen et al., 2015) or on entrepreneurial activity (Napolitano & Riviezzo, 2008). On the other hand, extant studies point out that incubation support neither influences EE impact on students’ entrepreneurial intentions (Souitaris et al., 2007) nor shows an impact on students’ entrepreneurial activities (Guerrero et al., 2018). These contradictory findings might be result of this research stream lacking a common theoretical foundation to explain the role of incubation support in EE context. We propose to integrate stakeholder theory and the entrepreneurial process perspective (Shane & Venkataraman, 2000) to shed light on the role of incubation support for effective EE. Stakeholder theory (Freeman, 2010) posits that to reach its potential and sustain its success, every organization has to (1) make its best effort to properly manage key stakeholders’ needs and expectations, and (2) establish an effective communication system within an organization so that every stakeholder’s need could be timely recognized and properly addressed. Logically, students’ needs for specific incubation support are likely to vary across different groups (e.g., female vs. male students, students with vs. those without prior exposure to entrepreneurship). For students, who engage in entrepreneurial projects during participating in EE, their needs and expectations should vary considerably along the entrepreneurial process. Thus, incubation support plays a supportive role for effective EE if such support is delivered at the right time and to the right groups.
Second, with regard to the characteristics of educational institutes hosting EE, researchers study different aspects. One aspect investigated is the ranking of educational institutes. For example, Fayolle (2000) shows that EE impact on actual ventures is stronger in less prestigious institutes than in highly prestigious institutes. Further, Walter et al. (2013) examine the research orientation of an educational institute measured by the average research budget per researcher through third-party grant, and report a negative effect on students’ entrepreneurial intention. Another aspect explored is the organizational culture of education institutes. For example, Jansen et al. (2015) find that a university culture of supporting entrepreneurship stimulates students to become entrepreneurs. Overall, extant findings on the role of characteristics of educational institutes are still fragmented and thus cannot be aggregated due to differing research foci and outcomes examined.
Third, there is little effort in searching for an effective model to deliver EE. There are only two studies investigating the relevance of the EE delivery models at HE institutes. Duval-Couetil et al. (2016) compare three different models to offer EE for engineering students and Karimi et al. (2016) zoom in on the status of EE by comparing the impact of elective EE with that of compulsive EE (see Appendix G for key findings).
Future Research Agenda
Building on our synthesis of extant findings, we develop a future research agenda to stimulate future research on stakeholder-related factors for EE to be effective (see Table 2 for an overview of our future research agenda).

General Research Topics Across the Three Stakeholder Groups
Our analysis reveals that extant knowledge on stakeholder-related aspects in EE research focuses mainly in the context of developed countries. However, grounding on institutional theory (e.g., North, 1990), Walter and Block (2016) reveal that national context plays an important role for effective EE, e.g., EE has a stronger positive impact on entrepreneurial activity in less developed countries compared to well-developed countries. Following this position, we propose that institutional structures are different between developing and developed countries and students as well as educators show different cultural backgrounds resulting in potentially different effects of stakeholder-related factors on EE effectiveness.
Next, across all sampled articles we find a focus of research on EE at the HE level. However, unlike university students, students at primary or secondary education levels have lower levels of human capital but more time to prepare for their future career. Accordingly, EE offered at lower school levels should aim for different objectives and foci, for example, getting students to know about the career option of being an entrepreneur rather than stimulating their entrepreneurial behaviors. Thus, different variables should play a role for different school levels and thus, factors contributing to effective EE should differ across school levels.
Following the logic of stakeholder theory (Freeman, 2010), EE outcomes should differ considerably because different stakeholders have different objectives with regard to EE. First, educators may aim at improving students’ entrepreneurial attitude. Second, educational institutes may be driven by stimulating students’ entrepreneurial behavior or by promoting an entrepreneurial culture at HE institutes (Bergmann et al., 2018). Third, students may feel satisfied if EE does improve their employability in the labor market. Fourth, from an industrial perspective, EE should stimulate people to become intrapreneurs in established firms (Hynes & Richardson, 2007). Fifth, from a governmental perspective, the economic benefit of EE, e.g., the number of start-ups or nascent entrepreneurs created because of EE, is of utmost importance (O’Connor, 2013). Taken together, grounding on stakeholder theory, future research needs to take a broader network of stakeholders into account, view effective EE from a more inclusive perspective. Specifically, we call for a more comprehensive study design using multiple outcome variables to reflect the inclusive value of EE for different stakeholder groups.
Further, we find little evidence on stakeholder interactions. Specifically, there is little research on how the interaction between different stakeholders and their characteristics leads to effective EE. In total, only four studies investigate some relationship. There is no study accounting for the educator-institute or for the student-educator-institute relation. We propose that because of different forms of education at different school levels, different qualification of educators at different educational institutes and different life stages of students, EE effectiveness is shaped specifically in the interaction of all three stakeholders. In this regard, following the logic by Matlay and Jones (2011), research needs to account for the interplay of stakeholders in EE and their role for EE to be effective.
Role of Student-Related Factors
In general, our SLR insights open several avenues for future research with regard to student-related factors. First, our insights on the role of gender addresses a research call raised by Nabi et al. (2017), i.e. how EE impact on different entrepreneurial outcomes is gender-specific. Nevertheless, as mentioned before, extant findings on EE effectiveness for female compared to male students are inconclusive. Hence, additional moderators might explain the differing results, for the same EE outcome. Here, institutional theory (e.g., North, 1990) emphasizes the institutional context as the causal force to explain the difference of economic structure and performance across different countries. Researchers may ground on institutional theory to dive deeper into gender stereotypes in different institutional settings (e.g., cultural, religious, political, economic and national settings) for a better understanding on the role of students’ gender on EE effectiveness.
Second, with regard to students’ age, extant studies focus on an age range from 15 (Peterman & Kennedy, 2003) to 36 years (Ahmed et al., 2017). However, from entrepreneurship research we know that the likelihood of entrepreneurial success increases for older entrepreneurs, i.e., above the age of 50 as “key entrepreneurial resources (such as human capital, financial capital, and social capital) accumulate with age” (Azoulay et al., 2018, p. 29). Here, we argue that also older people with great industry and functional experience can benefit from EE. Research should dive into this specific group and investigate how to design EE for the elder. Furthermore, we call for further research to cover a wider range of students’ age, thereby develop a more profound answer to the question: What is the best age at which to expose students to EE and to what kind of EE? (Galvão et al., 2018, p. 728). For example, at the lower level of the age range, researchers should investigate the concept of effective EE at primary or secondary schools. At the medium and upper level of the age range, researchers should move beyond classical educational institutes towards programs such as incubators or accelerators, where people of different age participate. Here, researchers need to also account for the entrepreneurial stage, for which students seek or need EE for. Specifically, studies could account for EE’s relevance depending on (1) future time perspective, (2) level of entrepreneurship-related human capital, and (3) different phases of the entrepreneurial process (i.e., opportunity identification, opportunity evaluation, and opportunity exploitation).
Regarding the role of students' prior entrepreneurial exposure, extant literature has not explored the positivity dimension of having entrepreneurial family members nor analyzed this dimension of having entrepreneurial experience. Consequently, future research should use a more comprehensive research design by considering both dimensions, the breadth and the positivity related to students’ prior experiences.
Role of Educator-Related Factors
Clearly, based on the limited number of EE studies investigating the role of educators for effective EE, current literature is far from providing a conclusive picture on the relevance of educator-related factors. As EE is essential for developing successful entrepreneurs (Martin et al., 2013), we need to pay more attention to the critical role and impact of those who design and deliver EE (i.e., the educators). In general, education research highlights the decisive role of educators for students’ career choices and development (Kotrlik & Harrison, 1989). In fact, also in EE, educators serve as role models to shape students’ future career choices (San-Martín, 2019). Thus, we need research identifying relevant educators’ biographical and personal characteristics that help stimulate participants’ entrepreneurial behavior.
According to social learning theory (Bandura, 1977, p. 22), “most human behavior is learned observationally through modeling: from observing others one forms an idea of how new behaviors are performed”. Furthermore, social learning theory contends, “not all models are equally effective in eliciting the types of behavior they themselves exemplify” because “responsiveness to modeling cues” partly depends on the characteristics of models (Bandura, 1977, p. 88). From our SLR, we know that educators’ professional background serves effective EE at HE level. Still, we do not know if this factor plays a similar role for effective EE at primary or secondary education levels or at other educational institutes such as accelerator programs. Furthermore, EE is increasingly offered outside of business schools, and even outside universities. In turn, this trend leads to differing educational backgrounds of educators. Thus, we need insights on the relevance of educators’ educational background or teaching experience and how these translate in educators’ entrepreneurship teaching approach and how this ultimately leads to effective EE.
Further, we know that teaching entrepreneurship is especially challenging as EE generally focuses on “a set of more challenging human characteristics that are difficult to teach or learn” (e.g., creativity, risk-taking, or leadership) (Neck & Corbett, 2018, p. 22). Thus, one educator might not be qualified enough to teach it all and co-teaching or even team-teaching may be a more appropriate and effective way in EE. In addition, educators’ social and professional network could play an important role. In fact, we observe a trend in EE that educators invite multiple guest speakers with different professional and social backgrounds to the classroom or even that two educators jointly host a course (Hägg & Gabrielsson, 2019). So far, research does neglect the question on the effectiveness of one vs. several EE educators in an entrepreneurship module and in a next step, the relevance of the diversity of guest speakers. Here, we encourage scholars to not only ground their future research on existing theoretical frameworks but also follow a grounded theory approach (e.g., Charmaz, 2006) and conduct exploratory research to develop new insights on the effects of having multiple educators and/or guest speakers in EE classrooms.
Gender role theory (e.g., Eagly, 1987) suggests that social expectations for appropriate behaviors of individuals differ between women and men, thereby leading to gender influencing a person’s career choice and development. On the one hand, based on gender role theory, we could argue that students look for equal gender role models (e.g., a female EE educator may be a better role model for female students). On the other hand, based on entrepreneurship research, we know that an entrepreneurial career is generally associated with masculine characteristics (Gupta et al., 2009). Consequently, one could argue that the educators’ gender should match (e.g., a male entrepreneurship educator is a more effective EE educator). Hence, future research should zoom in on the impact of educators’ gender on EE effectiveness.
Role of Institute-Related Factors
Overall, by synthesizing extant findings on the role of factors related to educational institutes hosting EE, our SLR reveals fruitful avenues for future research. First, we still do not know sufficiently whether providing incubation support and what kind of incubation support leads to effective EE. There is a pause in research on how to optimize the supportive role of incubation support for effective EE. We suggest future research to integrate stakeholder theory and the entrepreneurial process perspective (Shane & Venkataraman, 2000) for further investigation of the conditions and channels through which incubation support plays a supportive role in EE. It would be worthwhile to conduct research with the aim to develop an effective communication model between and among students, educators and educational institutes hosting EE also with other stakeholders (e.g., government officials, entrepreneurs, firms, professional associations, university alumni). Such research ensures that the right type of incubation support is delivered at the right time, to the right groups during an entrepreneurship course or program, thereby meeting the needs of students and educators.
With regard to the delivery model of EE, Duval-Couetil et al. (2016) zooms in on models to offer EE for engineering students. Future research needs to develop this young research focus and dive further into the design of the EE delivery model across different academic majors. We need to avoid the “one size fits all” approach and design EE “through a thorough understanding of the profile and background of the audience” (Fayolle & Gailly, 2008, p. 577). Here, researchers can apply the EE teaching model framework by Fayolle and Gailly (2008) to study the issue of EE design by “taking into account both the institutional constraints and the characteristics of learning as a personal process” (p.586). Building on this position could help researchers dive deeper into the relevance of EE delivery models for different academic majors, year of enrolment (e.g., freshman vs. senior or undergraduate vs. graduate), or education level. In addition, Karimi et al. (2016) highlight the role of elective EE vs. compulsive EE in raising students’ entrepreneurial intention. Nevertheless, we should not undervalue the compulsory design of EE, because apart from promoting entrepreneurship, EE also helps students to decide on the career path to follow, i.e., being employed vs. self-employed (Graevenitz et al., 2010) or improve their employability in the labor market (Dominguinhos & Carvalho, 2009). Thus, research should also account for career-related benefits in general as EE outcomes.
In addition, EE - as well as incubation support - may not only benefit students but also provide a range of benefits to other stakeholders (e.g., employees at the institute). Offering incubation support and entrepreneurship courses to other institutional members can result in benefits that go beyond students’ entrepreneurial activities, e.g. promoting an entrepreneurial culture and/or establishing a positive climate for entrepreneurship at educational institutes (Bergmann et al., 2018). However, the literature has paid little attention to such aspects. Thus, we emphasize again the need to consider a broader perspective on EE impact and take additional groups of stakeholders into account to reach a conclusive understanding of effective EE.
While we are aware that our SLR offers a variety of very different research gaps rich for future research, following the stakeholder theory some topics should have higher investigation priority than others. Stakeholder theory (Freeman, 1984, 2010) posits that to be effective one has to take into account all key stakeholders. Hence, we ask researchers to concentrate on future research propositions that point at using multiple outcome variables to reflect the inclusive value of EE for different stakeholder groups and/or investigating the interaction between different stakeholders, their characteristics and their relevance for effective EE.
Conclusion
The aim of this study was to provide a SLR on articles investigating the who in EE, i.e. the triad of student-educator-educational institute, and its role for effective EE. Based on stakeholder theory, we developed synthesized insights on extant research findings across these three stakeholders, discussed the role different stakeholder-related factors play for the EE - EE outcome relationship. In doing so, we have pointed out critical research gaps and derived various directions to inform and stimulate future research on factors contributing for EE effectiveness.
First, we find that extant studies lack a focus on stakeholder theory to assess EE effectiveness and call for researchers to use multiple outcome variables to reflect the inclusive value of EE for different stakeholder groups. Closely related, researchers have devoted little effort to studying how the interaction between different stakeholders and their characteristics lead to effective EE. As mentioned before, we find no study on the educator-educational institute or the students-educator-educational institute relation. Thus, our review points at a methodological weakness of the current literature, which prevents us from reaching a conclusive result on the factors enabling EE to be effective. For example, research into the role of students' educational background in EE should not solely investigate this factor and instead needs to consider this in interaction with educators’ personal characteristics and EE delivery model to reach a better understanding of the conditions for EE to be effective. Besides, additional stakeholders (e.g., school alumni, governmental agencies, entrepreneurs) and their collaboration are highly relevant for the design of EE and thus EE effectiveness (Bischoff et al., 2018). Following the logic of stakeholder theory, research needs a holistic framework to reflect sufficiently stakeholder-related circumstances and mechanism through which EE is effective.
Second, we find that the ‘one size fits all’ EE approach is not appropriate. To design and implement EE effectively, a variety of student-related factors such as gender, age, family background, and prior experience must be considered in specific educational contexts. Depending on these student characteristics, educators should accordingly choose appropriate curriculum contents and teaching methods, and/or coordinate the right incubation support at the right time to meet students’ needs and expectations.
Third, we find that educators with managerial or entrepreneurial experience seem to be effective at stimulating student entrepreneurship. This type of experience enables educators to be more effective at developing students’ entrepreneurial self-efficacy, nurturing students’ entrepreneurial intention by personal entrepreneurial stories, and assisting students to solve practical problems in the transition to become nascent entrepreneurs. However, we find only limited insights on educator-specific factors due to the small sample size of articles focusing on the educator. Thus, we call for future research to dive deeper into the role of educators’ biographical but also personal characteristics for effective EE at different educational settings.
Finally, we find indicative evidence for the important role of incubation support. However, we lack empirical evidence on whether different support services are relevant at different stages along the entrepreneurial process. Future research should devote on this proposition. Once, further knowledge is developed on how and when to provide specific incubation support, educational institutes need to set up funds to hire appropriate personnel and to develop necessary networks and platforms, e.g., networking services, business mentoring by entrepreneurial alumni or local entrepreneurs.
