Abstract
Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are frequently included in regular music classrooms, yet little is known about teachers’ and students’ classroom experiences. We sent a 35-question survey to all members of the National Association for Music Education who had identified themselves as elementary music teachers. We received a total of 569 responses; we analyzed the results from 441 who taught in the United States and who completed the entire survey. Most teachers were positive about including students with ASD and confident in teaching them. Teachers who expressed greater confidence in teaching students with ASD had more instruction related to special education during their undergraduate preparation and collaborated with more professionals in their school settings. Teachers reported that students with ASD were included in most of the regular music curriculum, and interactions with classmates were reported to be positive. Implications for teacher preparation, collaboration, and students’ music learning are discussed.
Autism has been the subject of ongoing and increasing interest in the media, in community and family conversations, and in the activities of professionals in medicine, psychology, and education. In 1990, the term “autism” was added to the list of terms that define a child with a disability in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), although the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-V; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013) uses the term autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We acknowledge that some people with autism may prefer identity-first language (i.e., “autistic”), but since the preferences of the students, their parents, and the teachers who participated in the current investigation were unknown, we use the term from the DSM (ASD) throughout this manuscript. The term “autism” is used in the list of disabilities in IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 2006).
By law, the Department of Education provides an annual report to Congress on the Implementation of the IDEA. The most current report was published in 2022 although the year in the title reflects the year for submitting the report to Congress (U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, Office of Special Education Programs, 2022). Data were collected from July 2018 through December 2019 and presented for ages 5 through 21 years old or ages 6 through 21 years old. Percentages of students with disabilities were based on an estimated resident population of over 65 million students in the United States. Of the estimated resident student population, over 6.4 million were students served under IDEA, and of those, 11% were reported under the category of autism. Increases in the percentages of students under the category of autism between Fall 2010 and 2019 are seen for all age groups with an increase of 80.7% for ages 6 through 11 years old. Data were collected for the time spent in general education classes, and differences are seen for all students with disabilities compared to those with autism. Percentages for all students with disabilities ages 5 through 21 years old indicated that 64.8% were educated in the regular class approximately 5 hr or more in a 6-hr school day. In comparison, data for students with autism show 39.8% educated in the regular class approximately 5 hr or more, 18.3% for approximately 3 or 4 hr, and 33.5% <3 hr per day.
In an analysis of Individualized Education Program (IEP) statements for students with extensive support needs (which included students with ASD), Kurth et al. (2019) found that a majority of the IEPs stipulated that students participate primarily in non-academic general education classes and “elective/specials” courses like physical education, music, and art. The ruling in the landmark case of Endrew F. v Douglas County Schools (2017) clarified that educators must justify the extent to which a student will be excluded from students without disabilities in all components of general education, including extracurricular activities.
Music research related to inclusion began shortly after the passage of IDEA (see research summaries in Jones, 2015). Although most of the research with children with ASD has been conducted in separate music therapy settings (Brown & Jellison, 2012), few studies have been conducted with children with ASD in inclusive music settings (Jellison & Draper, 2014). There is no published research about music teachers’ perspectives about including children with ASD in their classrooms and ensembles.
In a survey of over 13,000 music teachers of all levels and all areas in Texas, (Hicken et al., 2018), 1,691 individuals responded, but only the responses from the 1,110 who identified themselves as full-time music teachers in public schools were analyzed; 36% of these responses were from elementary music teachers. Of the 1,110 teachers across all levels, almost 90% taught students with ASD; elementary music teachers taught significantly more students with disabilities overall and more students with ASD than did secondary teachers. Yet, fewer than half of all teachers rated themselves as successful in teaching students with ASD, which may reflect a lack of classroom supports to meet students’ needs.
Support (aides and services as defined in IDEA) may be needed for physical accessibility; instructional assistance; social, behavioral, communication needs; and collaborative supports (Kurth et al., 2019). Most children with ASD require at least some level of support; often, general education teachers find it difficult to teach children with ASD, primarily because of challenging or disruptive behavior (Sansosti & Sansosti, 2012). The DSM-5 specifies three levels of support for people with ASD: requires support, requires substantial support, and requires very substantial support. We found no research reporting levels of support needed by children with ASD who are included in music class.
Purpose and Research Questions
Examinations of music research that examines music teachers’ perceptions about inclusion have focused broadly on all disabilities (see studies in Jones, 2015); no study to date has focused exclusively on music teachers’ perceptions about working with students with ASD. This issue is one of continuing importance since the number of children diagnosed with ASD are increasing, and it is likely that many are in regular elementary music classrooms. Learning more about teachers’ perceptions and concerns will help inform the preparation of future teachers for inclusive classrooms and may identify important areas of need among current teachers.
We conducted a national survey for the specific purpose of learning more about elementary music teachers who teach students with ASD in regular music classrooms. The survey was designed to answer the following research questions:
Method
Respondents and Procedure
In Fall 2018, following approvals from our respective institutional review boards and the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), NAfME sent a recruitment email to all 15,404 music teachers who selected elementary as their teaching level. The email included a description of the survey, a consent form, and a link to the survey to be conducted with Qualtrics software. A reminder email was sent 2 weeks later, and the survey closed within a month. We analyzed responses from 441 teachers who taught in the United States and who completed the entire first part of the survey (31 questions). From this sample, we also analyzed open-ended responses from 353 teachers, each of whom had completed at least one of the four open-ended questions at the end of the survey.
Survey Instrument
We consulted two of the most current survey studies of music teachers and students with disabilities in inclusive settings (Hicken et al., 2018; VanWeelden & Whipple, 2014) and developed questions that focused exclusively on the experiences, perceptions, and attitudes of elementary music teachers and students with ASD. We sent a pilot version of the survey to nine music education faculty and graduate students and revised the instrument based on their feedback. The final survey consisted of 35 questions in two parts, 31 with response choices using checklists and rating scales and four open-ended responses. The 31 questions were grouped in four broad categories: (a) demographic information (i.e., school size, years of teaching experience, number of students with ASD taught); (b) education related to special education and inclusion topics; (c) collaboration with other professionals; and (d) confidence teaching children with ASD. Four open-ended questions asked teachers to write about their strengths, concerns, strategies, and advice for new teachers. At the end of the survey, participants were given the option to open another link to indicate their willingness to be interviewed about their experiences at another time. The complete survey is presented as Online Supplementary Material (Appendix A).
Data Analysis
We analyzed and summarized the 441 teachers’ responses to the 31 questions in Part 1 using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlations. Among the 441 respondents, 353 answered at least one of the four open-ended questions, meeting our criterion for inclusion in the qualitative data set. After all open-ended responses were screened to remove non-responses and instances when responses included “none” or “n/a,” the totals for teachers who responded to each open-ended question were as follows: Strengths: n = 346; Concerns: n = 337; Strategies: n = 333; Advice: n = 329.
We relied on qualitative research sources (e.g., Creswell & Poth, 2018) to develop our analysis procedures for the open-ended responses. To begin, we developed preliminary codes by randomly selecting 5% (17) of the responses for each of the four questions (a total of 68 responses). Each of us independently read the 68 responses several times, independently developed and then discussed ideas for coding categories, and by consensus arrived at a list of categories and subcategories that were then used to prepare a research assistant for coding. Data from the training sessions were not included in the final data set.
From the remaining responses, we randomly selected 25% from each question (a total of 340 responses across four questions) to be analyzed in detail. A research assistant coded all statements from these responses, and one of us randomly selected and coded 25% of the responses for purposes of reliability. Reliability procedures (agreements divided by agreements plus disagreements) yielded the following reliability estimates for each response category: Strengths = 97%; Concerns = 95%; Strategies = 89%; Advice = 97%; and an overall reliability of 95%.
Results
Given the large amount of data from this survey, our results are presented in relationship to those that seem most relevant to our research questions. The findings are presented under two broad categories with subcategories: “The Teachers” (demographic information; teacher preparation, professional development, and years teaching; attitudes about inclusion; collaboration; confidence) and “Their Students” (access; participation; attitudes toward each other). There is some overlap across the categories, but we found this organization useful in thinking about the results, points for discussion, and implications for future research. Some findings from our analyses are presented next, but additional information and descriptive data are presented as Online Supplemental Materials (Tables S1–S12).
The Teachers
We received responses from teachers in 49 states. 52% (n = 285) taught at mid-sized schools with 465 to 1,500+ students. 95.26% (n = 522) were employed full-time, including 91.79% (n = 503) in public schools. There was a wide range of teaching experience: a range of 1 to 45 years and median of 15. When asked about the number of neurotypical children, children with disabilities, and children with ASD, we calculated the average class size reported was 78.8% neurotypical children and 14.8% children with disabilities, of which 6.4% were children with ASD. When asked about the total number of students with ASD in their classes and the total number of students with ASD who were accompanied by paraprofessionals, teachers reported working with an average of 12.2 students with ASD across all their classes (range 1–100; median 7), 36.5% of whom were accompanied in class by a paraprofessional.
Teaching Preparation, Professional Development, and Years Teaching
When teachers were asked whether they had taken any undergraduate courses related to special education and inclusion, 56.15% (n = 306) answered “yes,” and 60.26% (n = 326) answered “yes” when asked about additional training on these topics beyond their undergraduate studies. Because reported numbers for years teaching and years teaching in inclusive classrooms were similar, we analyzed only the data for the number of years of teaching.
We examined possible relationships between the number of years teaching and pre-service and inservice preparation related to special education topics. Teachers who had taken two or more undergraduate courses on special education topics tended to rate themselves as feeling more confident teaching students with ASD (r = . 22, p = .001, n = 223). Teachers with more experience teaching also tended to express more confidence in teaching students with ASD (r = .127, p = .011, n = 402) and were somewhat more likely to teach more inclusive classes in their schools (r = .11, p = .022, n = 402).
Inclusion
A majority of teachers (79.04%, n = 347) said that having a curriculum that included students with ASD was “very important” or “important,” and that students with ASD should “often” or “always” participate in the same music curriculum as their classmates (89.27%, n = 391). Less than half responded “often” or “always” when asked whether students with ASD can be held to similar musical standards as children without ASD (47.26%, n = 207), and whether children with ASD display the same level of musical achievement as their peers (44.39%, n = 194). Those who rated inclusion as “important” also tended to rate themselves as feeling more confident in teaching students with ASD (r = .39, p < .001, n = 401) and in teaching all students (r = .12, p = .019, n = 401).
Analysis of the coded, open-ended questions show that a large majority of teachers were concerned about their students’ learning (81.18%, n = 69), mostly about the learning of students with ASD (61.18%, n = 52) and to a much lesser degree, those without (18.82%, n = 16). When asked about the strengths of their students with ASD and what they bring to class, over half (56.47%, n = 48) of the teachers’ responses included students’ music skills and knowledge. When asked about strategies or actions to increase successful experiences for their students with ASD, teachers reported using individual adaptations (72.94%, n = 62), modifications to the curriculum (68.24%, n = 58), and adapting instruction (4.71%, n = 4). 31.76% (n = 27) of the responses were coded as “universal strategies” (See Table S11 for an operational definition of universal strategy).
Collaboration and IEPs
From the given list of possible collaborators, teachers most frequently reported collaborating often or always with paraprofessionals (49%, n = 210) and special educators (42%, n = 183), but only infrequently chose parents (10%, n = 43), music therapists (1%, n = 5), and medical/health professionals (3%, n = 15). Teachers who collaborated more often with other professionals tended to rate inclusion as more important (r = .13, p = .009, n = 401) and were more confident in teaching students with ASD (r = .28, p < .001, n = 402) and students overall (r = .16, p = .002, n = 402).
When asked how they were informed about their students’ diagnoses of ASD, about half (51.10%, n = 347) chose special education teachers as the source. Some received information about students’ IEP goals and strategies (34.63%, n = 294), and some had access to and looked at all or some of their students’ IEPs (32.98%, n = 280); not many participated in IEP meetings (14.72%, n = 125) or contributed music goals to the IEPs (8.83%, n = 75).
When asked in the open-ended questions to offer advice to a new teacher who taught in inclusive music classrooms, almost all said that the new teachers should collaborate (95.29%, n = 81) with special educators and other professionals (47.06%, n = 40), paraprofessionals (21.18%, n = 18), parents (18.82%, n = 16) and students themselves (8.24%, n = 7); however, when asked about strategies that they used personally to bring about successful experiences for students with ASD, only 28.24% (n = 24) mentioned collaboration.
Confidence in Teaching
Many teachers (43.41%, n = 191) responded that they were “moderately confident” about teaching students with ASD in their regular music classroom. Only 9.75% (n = 43) felt “extremely confident” compared to the 27.89% (n = 123) who were “extremely confident” teaching all students. We found that teachers who rated themselves as feeling more confident teaching students with ASD tended to rate themselves as feeling more confident teaching all students (r = .51, p < .001, n = 403). Respondents who had been teaching longer tended to feel more confident (r = .13, p = .011, n = 402), as did teachers who had taught longer in inclusive classrooms (r = .20, p < .001, n = 401). Teachers who expressed greater confidence in teaching students with ASD tended to be those who actually taught more students with ASD (r = .13, p = .011, n = 399), and taught more self-contained classes (r = .107, p = .032, n = 403).
Their Students
Access and Participation
Teachers were presented with six statements to measure perceptions of their effectiveness in teaching children with ASD in different inclusive contexts, teaching in the regular curriculum, using adaptions, and evaluating students’ achievements. More confident teachers more often said that students with ASD should participate in the same music curriculum as their peers with adaptations and other support as needed (r = .30, p < .001, n = 403). Many teachers responded “always” when asked how often their students with ASD are involved in regular classroom activities (70.23%, n = 309) and school performances that were part of the regular music program (71.82%, n = 316), but fewer (52.62%, n = 231) always involved them in festivals or in extracurricular activities such as field trips and other performances such as contests (35.68%, n = 157).
In the open-ended questions, teachers wrote about the strengths of their students with ASD and what they bring to their music classes. Most of the comments were coded as positive and included their students’ music skills and knowledge (56.47%, n = 48) and their students’ overall enjoyment of music and music activities (36.47%, n = 31).
Students’ Attitudes Toward Each Other
A large majority of teachers reported that students without ASD had either “positive” (46.94%, n = 207) or “very positive” (20.41%, n = 90) attitudes toward their classmates with ASD. Regarding attitudes of students with ASD toward classmates without ASD, teachers responded “positive” (39.91%, n = 176), “neither negative or positive” (36.51%, n = 161), or “unsure” (12.02%, n = 53). Significant relationships were found between teachers’ ratings of students’ attitudes and the teachers’ ratings for importance of inclusion of students with ASD; those who rated inclusion as more important tended to rate the attitudes of students without ASD toward their classmates with ASD more positively (r = .11, p = .034, n = 401) and tended to rate the attitudes of students with ASD toward their classmates more positively (r = .15, p = .002, n = 401).
Discussion
To date, we found no music research that examined teachers’ perceptions, experiences, and attitudes about including children with ASD in their classrooms. To learn more, we conducted a national survey of elementary music teachers and found that a majority of respondents were positive about inclusion, and more specifically, positive about the inclusion of students with ASD in their classrooms and in the regular music curriculum. Furthermore, we have learned more about their preparation for inclusive classes; their provisions for an accessible regular curriculum; their levels of confidence and degrees of collaboration; and their perception of interactions among students with ASD and their classmates.
Inclusion in the Regular Curriculum
A major and continuing premise from the mandate of IDEA 1975 requires that children with disabilities are to be educated with children without disabilities to the maximum extent possible; the 1990 amendments require their access to the regular curriculum and participation in extra-curricular activities and nonacademic settings (with aides, services, and other supports to facilitate access). We assume that a majority of the music teachers in our survey support these requirements; they responded that the music education needs of students with ASD would be better met in regular music classes than in separate music classes, and that their presence does not hinder the progress of other students in the classroom. They also responded positively when asked about including students with ASD in the regular music curriculum, classroom activities, and school performances. We do not have information about the music behaviors of their students in these activities and performances, although 44.49% reported that students with ASD “always” or “often” demonstrated the same level of music achievement as their peers without ASD, and 47.26% “always” or “often” assessed students with ASD using the same musical standards as they used to assess other children in the class. It is possible that the percentages for music achievement and assessments for students with ASD are influenced by their need for support, and the teachers’ lack of knowledge of support options.
Teachers’ attitudes toward inclusion for students with ASD affect students’ success in the classroom, although positive attitudes about inclusion are not necessarily related to teachers’ awareness or use of empirically supported interventions to bring about their success (Segall & Campbell, 2012). Many teachers in our study were concerned about the music learning of their students with ASD, and yet a majority focused almost exclusively on curricular modifications to bring about successful experiences for their students with ASD and reported limited use of adaptations for instruction, universal strategies, and other forms of support (e.g., collaboration with others; support from peers.) Some curricular and instructional adaptations may be necessary to meet individual learning needs, but there is the danger of overuse, thus limiting a student’s access to regular classroom goals and activities. A variety of strategies within the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework can be implemented to protect against overuse and overspecialization of adaptations; these strategies are applicable in music teaching and learning environments (Darrow, 2016).
UDL is considered a scientifically valid framework for guiding education practice and has been used widely for decades as an approach to address the learning needs of all students (Ballard & Dymond, 2017; Capp, 2017). We may learn more about the educational practices of music teachers and, importantly, the music goals and learning of their students with ASD through qualitative approaches such as interviews and classroom observations. What regular music goals do teachers make accessible for students with ASD; are goals appropriately challenging; when are curricular modification appropriate, and are students making progress?
The issue of high standards and progress in educational programs was taken up by the U.S. Supreme Court in Endrew F. v. Douglas County (2017) , a case concerning a child with autism. The Court stated that the child’s IEPs reflected his lack of progress and ruled that “every child should have the chance to meet challenging objectives” with a program that is “reasonably calculated to enable a child to make progress appropriate in light of the child’s circumstances” (p. 991).
Teacher Preparation
The ruling in Endrew F. v. Douglas County (2017) requiring students with ASD to have an educational program with challenging objectives and assessment of progress is viewed as favorable for all students in special education and as having implications for preparing special education teachers (Yell & Bateman, 2019). It is safe to assume that music teacher preparation programs address the same issue of high standards for students and assessing students’ progress. It is, however, unclear whether these issues are addressed broadly to apply to students with disabilities. Instructors within music teacher preparation programs traditionally have worked to foster the development of music programs with high levels of accomplishment. Undergraduates are instructed on ways to develop curricular goals and assessments and implement state, district, and national music standards, but are music teachers learning to have high expectations for students with disabilities and learning how to develop meaningful goals, adapt goals and instruction only when necessary, and assess the progress of students with disabilities?
Music researchers have reported consistently that music teachers have had limited or no preservice preparation about disabilities and practices for inclusive music classrooms, thus limiting their students’ opportunities for meaningful music learning experiences (VanWeelden & Whipple, 2014). Authors have expressed an ongoing need for teacher education programs to prepare future teachers to assess and evaluate students with disabilities and implement appropriate adaptations and supports (A. R. Draper & Bartolome, 2021; Gfeller et al., 1990; Grimsby, 2018; Hammel, 2001; Hourigan, 2007; McCord & Watts, 2010). Yet, just 56% of the teachers we surveyed reported having some form of undergraduate preparation related to special education or had additional training beyond their undergraduate degree.
National Association of Schools of Music (NASM, 2021)–approved teacher preparation programs are not required to include a specific course related to special education topics in undergraduate music education degrees; however, a recent survey of NASM music educator program representatives indicated that about half of the 162 undergraduate programs surveyed offer (56.2%) or require (52.5%) at least one music-specific course on teaching diverse students (Culp & Salvador, 2021). Schools did not describe the content, so it is unclear whether these courses include information or experiences important to teaching children with disabilities in regular classes.
The lack of preservice preparation for music teachers is concerning given that almost 95% of all children with disabilities are in regular classrooms for at least some portion of the school day (U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, Office of Special Education Programs, 2022) and they frequently are included in elementary music classes (Hicken et al., 2018; VanWeelden & Whipple, 2014). Although professional development courses may be available for music teachers, we found no significant relationship between feelings of confidence in teaching students with ASD and professional development experiences on special education topics. In contrast, we found a significant positive relationship between feelings of confidence in teaching students with ASD and having more undergraduate coursework in special education topics. The relationship between teachers’ confidence and teaching competence in inclusive classrooms has yet to be explored fully, although it is widely accepted that the primary path to preparing confident, competent teachers is an accredited undergraduate teacher education program.
Beyond academic course content on inclusion and disabilities, preservice, inservice, and teacher mentors all identify fieldwork as a valuable experience in music teacher preparation programs (Conway, 2012; MacLeod & Walter, 2011). Music teachers who work with students with disabilities through field experiences and service projects experience positive benefits, including increases in levels of comfort, confidence, and knowledge and skill of instructional strategies and adaptations (Bartolome, 2017; A. R. Draper & Bartolome, 2021; Hourigan, 2007; VanWeelden & Whipple, 2005).
Although we cannot generalize from our findings to other elementary music teachers, it may be safe to suggest that when important knowledge about inclusion and inclusive field experiences are integrated into undergraduate course content, graduates of those programs may be more aware of empirically verified strategies to facilitate inclusion, more likely to seek out support when needed, collaborate, and generally be more confident and successful teaching students with ASD.
Confidence and Collaboration
As discussed previously, we found that teachers who were more confident teaching students with ASD were also those who had more undergraduate coursework in special education topics. More confident teachers also had more years of experience teaching students with ASD; findings similar to Hicken et al. (2018). It takes time, however, to gain experience. Something can be done for new teachers now—those who teach students with ASD, who may lack confidence, and who have had limited undergraduate coursework and experiences related to teaching students in inclusive classrooms.
With or without adequate preparation or experiences as undergraduates, all new teachers would benefit from collaboration with individuals who are knowledgeable about the students they teach. Special educators and parents can inform a new teacher of the student’s characteristics; interests; level of needed support; teaching strategies and adaptations; use of assistive technology; ways to facilitate communication and interactions with classmates, and so on. Teachers can learn much about a student through interactions with members of the student’s IEP team. Unfortunately, most teachers in our study did not participate in IEP meetings. Music teachers are often uninvolved in the IEP process and without adequate preparation may not have knowledge of this process or the potential support they could receive from members of the IEP team (McCord & Watts, 2010). Interactions with team members can be invaluable, particularly for those teachers who lack confidence and need support for students they find challenging to teach.
There was a positive relationship between confidence and collaboration, but we also found that more confident teachers talked with different kinds of collaborators. A majority collaborated with individuals from their school—the special education teacher, paraprofessionals, and regular classroom teachers, but unfortunately, we found low percentages for collaborations with parents. Percentages for collaboration with music therapists and medical/health professionals were the lowest, a finding that that may reflect the proximity and availability of these individuals to teachers and that these services may not have been required.
Relationships between confidence, collaboration, and different kinds of collaborators were similar to those found by Hicken et al. (2018), a study about students broadly defined as having a disability, with the exception of comparisons for collaboration with paraprofessionals. Specific to students with ASD, we found that more teachers collaborated with paraprofessional than teachers in Hicken et al. (2018). In a study of elementary music teachers’ perceptions of the role of paraprofessionals in inclusive classrooms (all disabilities), Majerus and Taylor (2020) found that only a few teachers collaborated with paraprofessionals outside of the classroom, but were positive about their support, particularly when the paraprofessionals provided behavioral and physical support and when they adapted music activities. We did not examine the role of paraprofessionals for students with ASD in our study.
We need more information about the role of paraprofessionals working with children with ASD, and specifically their actions regarding students’ participation and music learning. Paraprofessionals, however, are only one source of support. When needed supports are provided in regular classrooms, evidence shows that students with even extensive support needs outperform their counterparts educated in self-contained classrooms (Gee et al., 2020).
Students’ Attitudes and Interactions
Teachers’ reports about students’ positive attitudes toward each other are particularly heartening given that most students with ASD experience social difficulties in communication and interactions (APA, 2013). Did teachers nurture positive attitudes among their students, and if so, what were their strategies?
A substantive research base in special education supports the cognitive, social, and emotional benefits of positive interactions between seemingly disparate groups (Bowman-Perrott et al., 2014; Morningstar et al., 2015), and we have conducted research in inclusive music classrooms that shows increases in positive attitudes and prosocial behaviors among children with and without disabilities as a result of structured small-group interactions (E. A. Draper, 2017; E. A. Draper et al., 2019; Jellison et al., 1984). Teacher interviews and classroom observations could lead to important findings about the roles of students with ASD in small-group interactions and possible benefits for students’ levels of communication, social competence, and music learning.
Limitations
Most of the questions in the survey were designed to collect quantitative data; we are eager to explore some of the findings using qualitative approaches. Although we cannot generalize from our sample, we are enthusiastic about the contributions of this first study about music teaching and students with ASD and the many research questions that emerged from our work.
Closing
We approached the idea of a national survey on this topic with some trepidation knowing the possibility of a small return given our narrow focus on topics of inclusion and ASD. Our expectations were confirmed; however, the teachers who chose to respond have provided new information about relationships between experience, confidence, importance of inclusion, and collaboration. We are enthusiastic about the positive responses related to students’ access to the regular curriculum and classroom activities, but empirical research is needed to answer specific questions about the students’ levels of participation, the quality of their music learning experiences, their progress and musical development, and the strategies and supports teachers are using to bring all this about in inclusive classrooms.
The picture, however, is not entirely positive when considering the issues of collaboration, involvement in the IEP process, use of empirically verified interventions, and preparedness for including students with ASD. How can we ensure that music teachers have the knowledge and skills to design and deliver a quality music program that is accessible, equitable, and flexible and one that challenges and meets not only the needs of students with ASD, but all students? How can we increase the number of teacher education programs that provide relevant knowledge and skills about inclusion and present opportunities for teachers’ continued growth and support through creative post-graduate support systems?
From the results of this study and previous research, we know that attitudes, confidence, experience, and collaboration matter, although it will be new empirical research that will answer more specific questions about the complex issues surrounding teacher preparation and building collaborative support networks for all teachers. Our challenge is to prepare music teachers who are confident and competent teaching all students; who build support systems through collaboration; who create quality, inclusive programs; and who design accessible music learning environments where all students participate, experience personal success, and contribute to the success of their classmates.
