Component Restoration Models of Highway Bridges for Resilience Assessment: A Nationwide Expert-Opinion Survey Study and Application

This study performs a nationwide expert-opinion survey in Mainland China to establish component restoration models of highway bridges toward high-fidelity resilience assessment. To this end, a questionnaire based on component damage states is designed to collect expert opinions on key variables of the restoration models, including loss of functionality, traffic decision, idle time, repair strategy, and recovery time. More importantly, this study introduces the concept of repair-induced loss of functionality into the component restoration models, in addition to the traditional earthquake-induced loss of functionality. According to the survey results, both deterministic and probabilistic restoration models are developed, where the former is for practical application while the latter characterizes epistemic uncertainties in the key variables. Finally, a case study on a highway bridge with multiple types of vulnerable components is carried out to illustrate the application of the component restoration models for full bridge resilience assessment.
