Localised corrosion tests on austenitic stainless steels for biomedical applications

Abstract

Electrochemical localised corrosion tests (cyclic potentiodynamic, potentiostatic with scratch, modified ASTM F746) were conducted in artificial physiological solutions on two traditional austenitic stainless steels, types AISI 316L and ASTM F138, and a new high nitrogen austenitic stainless steel, type 20Cr9Ni2MoO·39N. The results pointed to the superiority of the 20Cr9Ni2Mo0·39 N steel with respect to the traditional ones. No effects on localised corrosion resistance owing to addition of 10% serum to physiological solutions were detected. The possibility that the modified ASTM F746 test could give rise, for the new 20Cr9Ni2Mo0·39N steel, to a controversial classification of the materials performance, depending on different interpretations of localised corrosion stimulation criteria, is discussed.
