A Study of the Structure of Martensite by Internal-Friction Measurements

Abstract

Cold working of tempered martensite affects the internal-friction peak height and the peak temperature, these effects being the reverse of those produced on tempering. The shift in peak temperature is explainable in terms of the average active dislocation loop length and the relaxation time. The variation with temperature of the amplitude-dependent part of the internal friction is thought to be attributable to change with temperature of the drag due to carbon atoms.
