Use of NFM Iddon cold feed extruder and novel low temperature curing EPDM to reduce processing and curing energy consumption

EPDM sulphur-cure compounds that are mouldable and curable in acceptable times at relatively low temperatures have recently been developed and patented. Besides the associated reduced manufacturing energy, and hence reduced environmental costs, technical benefits are derived. Essential constituents in these processable low temperature curing (LTC) formulations are a compatible liquid polymer that helps induce mouldability at low temperatures and particular ultraactive accelerators to bring about vulcanisation at temperatures as low as 90–120°C. An EPDM LTC rubber has been successfully extruded using a highly efficient cold feed extruder, with a resultant reduction in energy consumption for this processing stage, including heating. Acceptable magnitudes of properties can be achieved, including tensile properties, tear strength (especially), and air-aging resistance, as well as adequate shelf life.
