Geology and solid mineral deposits of the northern United Arab Emirates

Abstract

Development projects in the northern United Arab Emirates have created a demand for high-quality industrial rocks and minerals. A thorough review of the solid mineral resources has been undertaken to help to maximize the use of domestic supplies of these materials. The principal resources are hard, ophiolite-derived aggregate and limestone of cement and aggregate quality together with smaller amounts of chromite, gypsum and construction sand. Standards for the products vary between the separate emirates and these differences need to be resolved if a unified, federation-wide minerals policy is to be achieved. A table of principal aggregate producers has been prepared to assist in the formulation of this policy. Further exploration could also lead to the identification of economic deposits of some other metalliferous minerals.
