Some topical problems are described in which fatigue is important in both the design and operation of the generating plant of the CEGB. Emphasis is given to materials aspects and also to those areas where fracture mechanics and associated inspection procedures are of significance. However, it is also shown that many fatigue failures are readily explained in terms of the violation of the conventional fatigue design criteria. Areas where further work is required are indicated.
