Abstract
The cobalt based alloys are briefly described and classified by their response to machining. Typical forms of chip obtained when machining these alloys under different conditions are shown. The appearance of these chip forms and their variation with cutting conditions are accounted for by examining the behaviour of the carbide network and the cobalt matrix under stressed conditions. A model of the chip formation process is presented that takes into account the structure of these alloys.
