Abstract
The hot deformation behaviour of SiCp/2024 aluminium alloy composites, with various sizes of SiCp reinforcements (1,8, 15, 36, and 44 μm), was studied by hot torsion tests in the temperature range 320–520°C under strain rates of 0.2–3.0 S-l. For the composites reinforced with 8, 15, 36, and 44 flm SiCp, dynamic recrystallisation (DRX) was responsible for hot restoration at 320–480°C, while for the composite reinforced with 1 μm SiCp DRX was responsible for hot restoration at 320–430°C, and dynamic recovery was responsible for hot restoration at 480°C. The composite reinforced with 8 μm SiCp showed the highest flow stress (265 MPa) at 320°C and the highestfailure strain (3.65) at 480°C under a strain rate of 1.0 S-l; while composite reinforced with 1 μm SiCp showed the highest strain rate sensitivity (0.36) at 480°C.
