This paper deals with heat transfer during short circuiting gas metal arc welding of mild steel. Three major heat sources can be distinguished: arc heating of the anode, arc heating of the cathode, and Joule heating of the electrode extension. Based on these heat sources a model is presented which describes the heat transfe; both to the electrode and to the workpiece. The validity of the model was tested by comparing predicted values of the heat transfer with experimental data. It appears that good agreement exists between model and experiment.
