A shrink-fit peg in a hole subjected to bending: Unloading,reloading and frictional shakedown

The problem studied is that of a peg, shrink-fitted into a recess within an elastically similar block of material. In this paper, earlier results for the slip and separation states induced by the application of a monotonically increasing remote transverse force are extended to the cases of unloading and reloading. The steady state slip pattern present is also inferred. Knowing the shakedown condition will reveal the way that the component behaves when the load is cycled, determining the periods of major and minor damage. The interference contact pressure needed for prevention of steady state slip at all points in the steady state are deduced, and it is shown that this is less stringent than the pressure needed to avoid all slip in the first loading cycle.
