Wave propagation in piezoelectric laminated cylindrical shells under large deformations and rotary inertias

Abstract

This article presents an analytical solution for wave propagation in piezoelectric laminated cylindrical shells under large deformation with the effect of rotary inertias. In this research, non-linear dynamic governing equations of piezoelectric laminated cylindrical shells with freely supported end conditions are derived on the basis of the minimum potential energy principle. The effects of piezoelectricity, rotary inertias, and geometrical non-linear deformations on wave propagation are considered in the governing equations. Wave propagation characteristics curves are carried out by solving an eigenvalue problem. In example calculations, the effects of the wave propagation modes, piezoelectric layers, and the stacking sequence on wave propagation in piezoelectric laminated cylindrical shell are obtained and discussed from the wave characteristics curves. The results carried out can be used in the ultrasonic inspection techniques and health monitoring for piezoelectric laminated structures.
