The Isothermal Stirling Cycle with Arbitrary Equation of State

Abstract

The isothermal analysis of the practical Stirling cycle is generalized so as to be applicable to all working fluids for which an equation of state may be written v_s = v_s(p, t), given that v_s (specific volume) has a unique value for specified p, t. The treatment is exemplified by reference to a refrigerating machine operating near the critical point of its working fluid. The results suggest that caution may be necessary in the selection of operating pressures when certain gases are used as working fluids in reversed Stirling-cycle machines.
