Abstract
During 1981 and 1982 the fifteen year old Ford ‘D’ Series was replaced by the distinctively designed Cargo range. This is intended to meet road transport needs in the 1980s and beyond for vehicles from 6 to 32.5 tonnes gross mass and up to 150 kW. This segment covers about 50 per cent of the total Western European market for commercial vehicles above 3.5 tonnes.
This paper gives a glimpse of how the objectives for such a programme were defined and how they were met by careful attention to planning, initial design, development and testing with the close co-operation of manufacturing engineers at all stages.
