Abstract
The kinetic method was used to determine the proton affinities (PA) of some homologous alkyl nitriles, C1 – C8, and new PA values for five nitriles were derived. Both metastable ion (MI) and collision-induced dissociations (CID) of the proton-bound dimers were studied. The PA values derived depended on whether MI or CID results were used. The effect of different target gases was investigated and was found to be small. Weaknesses in the kinetic method are discussed.
