Abstract
During the 16th year of the Journal, 131 unsolicited manuscripts (original research and essays) were submitted. The proportion from the UK (57%) was similar to recent years, with 11% from the rest of Europe, 14% from North America and 13% from Australia and New Zealand. At the end of October 2011, 16 (12%) had been accepted for publication, 112 (85%) had been rejected and three (2%) have been invited to submit a new version. At the outset we set ourselves a target of informing authors of our initial decision within 12 weeks. Over the 16th year the mean time was seven weeks. For the 25 papers published in volume 16, the mean length of time between submission and acceptance (including time to revise the manuscript) was 198 days (range 83–436) and between acceptance and publication was 209 days (range 116–325). We will endeavour to maintain these standards which are only possible thanks to the help of the following people who kindly agreed to review papers for us during our 16th year:
