Abstract

Bridie's (Figure 1) real name was Osborne Henry Mavor, born on 3 January 1888 in Glasgow where he studied medicine and qualified in 1918. Dr OH Mavor served in the RAMC in both world wars and practised between them but his passion for the theatre made James Bridie take over as a full-time dramatist for the last ten years of his life. Bridie wrote The Switchback (1929), Tobias and the Angel (1930), The Anatomist (1930) and Daphne Laureola (1949) – 40 plays in all. He founded Glasgow Citizens Theatre (1943) and a Scottish College of Drama (1950). 1
