Abstract

Venous diagnosis and intervention are evolving fields in which innovation, combined with a desire to improve quality-of-life outcomes, often leads to newer, and hopefully better, diagnostic and procedural advances. When properly applied, the modern endovenous and refined surgical techniques allow physicians to perform procedures that improve efficacy, reduce postoperative morbidity, decrease recovery time and, most importantly, improve a patient's quality of life.
Having written and edited venous textbooks, I know the amount of effort, pain and sacrifice that it takes to produce a well-illustrated, informative and up-to-date text book. In addition, this treatise is complimented with an online-version enhanced by video. The computer-version allows you more freedom including well-performed procedures and excerpts from the International Vein Congress … What more can the reader want?
This first edition, according to Almeida, is set up as a text-atlas. However, he understates this book. There are 22 chapters, 492 pp., video demonstrations of ultrasound anatomy, diagnostic duplex and a cadre of procedures. The text is easy to read and well-illustrated. Although many of the chapters were written by Almeida with personal bias, there are 14 additional authors and/or co-authors well-recognized in the field of venous disease. Readers who do not perform all aspects of venous disease, i.e.: deep venous intervention, will find these chapters clear, concise and well-illustrated. Likewise, those readers who already perform these procedures, this book serves as a great review.
Jose Almeida MD, the editor of Atlas of Endovascular Venous Surgery states, ‘This book was conceived as a well-illustrated technical guide for the endovascular surgical management of venous diseases … our efforts will be realized if the book proves helpful to any physician committed to treating patients with venous disease.’ Almeida has more than achieved his goals.
The only major shortfall of this book is that I am not included in the authorship. This book is a must-have as part of your venous collection.
