Effects of Suggestion on Two Measures of Stability of Perception of Two Fixated Stimuli

Abstract

Fragmentation and disappearances were shown by both a square luminous frame fixated in darkness and a similarly-shaped black stimulus fixated against a luminous field. Results had acceptable split-half reliability (.78 to .95). Suggestion failed to affect significantly disappearance on 2-min. trials of the luminous frame, although it did affect disappearance of the black stimulus (p < .001). Disappearances of the luminous frame were reported to be more clear-cut. They decreased during dark adaptation, refuting an interpretation based on increasing scotopic foveal insensitivity.
