Os made judgments of the apparent rate of magnification of an approaching object as a cue to its distance. Os were separated into 2 groups of 20 on the basis of their relative field dependency. Os viewed a radially moving target which provided the sensation of movement in depth. 2 target sizes and 2 values of rate of movement were used. Half of each group of 20 Os viewed the large target, and 10 viewed the small target, but at both rates of movement. Os were to judge if the target appeared near or far. A significantly larger proportion of near judgments were associated with the high rate of movement.
