The present study investigated two variables that may control institutionalized, retarded children's behavior under a schedule of contingent reinforcement for a simple motor response. The distance between the adult and the site at which reinforcers were administered (locus of reinforcement) and the extent to which the adult mediated the dispensement of reinforcers (mediation of reinforcement) were varied. A Setting main effect and a Setting × Time interaction were observed.
