32 male and 32 female subjects' free recall for 21 nouns was examined under four conditions: instructions to form linking images, link only, image only, and learn without any specific instructions. High- and low-imagery words, equated for frequency, were used as stimuli. Females recalled significantly more words than males, and high-imagery words were significantly better recalled than low-imagery words. No interaction approached significance.
