This study was undertaken to investigate the effectiveness of a programmed unit in reading for 12 (11 black, 1 white, M1Q = 81.33) students selected from Grades 2 and 3 (ages 7-2—9-8) in a K-5 school. Teachers chose from among children who had been in school 2 or 3 yr. and had not learned to read the basic vocabulary words for those grades. Students were administered a criterion test as a pretest. Upon completion of the program the criterion test was readministered. Improvement in recognition was significant.
