A study of semantic divergent-processing ability using student (n = 297) and adult (n = 66) samples yielded positive correlations between this construct and childhood magazine reading, childhood special training, and childhood group memberships. Positively related to divergent-processing ability were the adulthood variables of magazine readership and group membership (within the student sample) and radio listenership and magazine readership (within the adult sample). Formal education was also found positively associated with divergent processing among the adults.
