Studies relating two dimensions of control over work, discretionary latitude and control over work pace or speed are reviewed. Findings from these studies and new data presented here have led to the conclusion that the amount of control a worker has over his job activities relates to levels of personal satisfaction and adjustment and to perceptions of the job as being ‘ideal’ or one with inherent risk of accidents.
